Chassis:
This is the second of the three Team Cars built for the 1950 season. Driven by Lance Macklin and George Abecassis, it won the 3-litre class and the Index of Performance in that year's 24 Hours of Le Mans. With various updates, it proved successful again the following season with class victories at the Mille Miglia and Le Mans, and four stage wins on the Alpine Trial. Amazingly the car never failed to finish a race it started in. Chassis LML/50/8 was subsequently used on the road by David Brown and also road-tested for Autocar magazine.
As one of the most significant Aston Martins built during his ownership, Brown refused to sell the car despite numerous inquiries. He finally caved and sold the car to his close friend Gerald Lascelles. Like Brown, he loved the car and despite regularly using it on the road and in races, managed to preserve the car's originality. He held on to the car until his death and it remained in the family for a few more years. Eventually his son sold decided to sell this most important Team Car and offered it in the RM Auctions' 2009 Automobiles of London sale. Estimated to sell for £250,000-£450,000, it found a new owner for hefty £550.000. The new owner brought the car to Villa d'Este where it is pictured and he plans to give the highly original car more outings in the future.
