Featured is quite one of the most unusual custom coachbuilt Ferraris ever constructed. It is the first of the five Series II examples produced in 1956 and 1957 and the only SuperAmerica to be fitted with a Scaglietti body. The car was originally commissioned by by Dottore Enrico Wax, a loyal Ferrari customer with an unique taste. No doubt inspired by contemporary American cars, the two door coupe body received more than its fair share of polished and chrome trim. The most notable 'American' touches are the large fender fins, the stainless steel roof and the rocker panels.
Wax sold the car before the end of the decade and it ended up in the United States, where it was modified considerably. Now in an absolutely dreadful condition, it was eventually bought by great Ferrari collector Greg Garrison in 1986. The unique body was missing almost entirely, so Garrison had original Scaglietti employees recreate it under the supervision of Sergio Scaglietti. Although the car was originally painted black, Garrison decided to finish it in a dark burgundy red. The roof and fins were given a brushed finish, which added to the unusual look of the car.
When Garrison passed away in March of 2005, the Scaglietti SuperAmerica was still part of his collection. His family decided to sell the Pebble Beach class winning machine together with several other unique Ferraris during the 2007 Gooding Pebble Beach auction. It found a new owner for a healthy $1.3 million.
