Chassis:
This is the fifth of five MP4/2Cs used during the 1986 season. Alain Prost used the car in the final two races of the year. With a second and a victory, the car was vital to secure Prost's second world driver's championship. This was also the last win for the hugely successful MP4/2 range. It has been retained by McLaren and was restored to full running order for the 2010 Goodwood Festival of Speed.
Here it was driven by McLaren test-driver Chris Goodwin and both of the team's F1 drivers; Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton. Button later stated that this was the best day of his life. On the Festival of Speed's Saturday morning, the car was reunited with former Porsche engine builder Gerhard Kuechle. He was invited by McLaren to start the delicate V6 engine and warm it up ahead of Button's run up the hill. We would like to thank McLaren and Neil Trundle in particular for allowing us full access to the car and all its intricate details.
