McLaren entered the third and final M16 in the 1971 Indy 500 for Denny Hulme. In qualifying he could not manage to match the pace of his team-mate Peter Revson and fellow M16 racer Mark Donohue. He nevertheless set the fourth fastest time and placed chassis M16A/3 on the second row of the grid. Hulme had a disastrous first lap as he spun on the third corner. He managed to fight his way up to eighth before he was forced to retire with a dropped valve.
