One of just 14 produced, this 718 RS 61 was delivered new to American Porsche stalwart Bob Holbert. He raced the car on the East Coast before it passed through the hands of Tom Payne and Millard Ripley. Together, the three Americans scored 13 wins and 20 podium finishes in chassis 718-070 between 1961 and 1963. Its retirement from racing was brief as it returned to the track for historic events in 1969. The car was fully restored in 1995 and in March of 2010 it was sold at a Gooding auction for just over $1.7 million to Sir Stirling Moss.

At the time, Moss was actually recovering from two broken ankles after a fall in his lift-shaft; he bought the car from his hospital bed. One of the reasons for acquiring the car was his fond memory of racing one in period, coming very close to winning the Targa Florio outright in 1961. He brought the car to the Monterey Motorsport Reunion but unfortunately this outing was cut short by an accident on the first lap of practice. Chassis 718-070 was next brought out for the 2011 Le Mans Legend support race. After sampling the car for one lap in practice, Sir Stirling announced his retirement from racing. He had scared himself and felt it was time to end his 60+ year career. He did demonstrate the car again a few weeks later during the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
