Chassis:
Chassis 019 was one of three twin-stage supercharged Auto Union D Types that debuted at the 1939 Reims Grand Prix. The revised engine saw power up by 65 bhp to an impressive 485 bhp. With a first, second and sixth, it was a very impressive first outing for the new car. This car finished sixth in the hands of Hans Stuck. It survived the War and the subsequent stay in the east. During the 1990s it was retrieved together with a single-stage car by an American of Russian origin. He had the cars restored at Crosthwaite & Gardiner and first showed them during the 1994 Oldtimer Grand Prix at the Nurburgring. While the sister car was sold to Audi, this one remained in private hands. At the 2009 Bonhams Quail Auction in August, it will be offered and it is expected to sell for over $8 million. In the build-up to the much anticipated auction, the car returned to Reims, exactly seventy years after its debut. It was demonstrated by the Auto Union experts Crosthwaite & Gardiner of behalf of Bonhams.
