Chassis: 63.002
The first production Tipo 63 built, chassis 63.002 was supplied new to Briggs Cunningham's team with a four cylinder engine for the 1961 Sebring 12 Hours. It was driven at its debut by Bruce McLaren and Walt Hansgen, who failed to finish due to a rear axle failure. A few weeks later, it was the fastest of the three Tipo 63s during the Le Mans Test where driving duties were shared by Carlo Maria Abate and Hansgen. Rebuilt with the V12 engine and extended nose, it was piloted to fourth in the 24 Hours of Le Mans by Dick Thompson and Augie Pabst.

Following the Le Mans race, the car was retired from active duty and replaced by a new example with a slightly longer wheelbase. For customs purposes this brand new Tipo 63 also received the chassis number 63.002, and to further add to the confusion, the prototype car also originally sported the number 002. Literally stacked on a shelf, the short wheelbase chassis 63.002 was finally acquired from the factory by the current owners in the 1990s.

The subsequent restoration took several years with sourcing the correct engine being the biggest problem. Eventually, it was decided to fit a slightly later vintage V12 engine that had been used in the back of a Cooper Formula 1 car. Four years in the making, the ex-Cunningham Tipo 63 was finally back to full running order in the late 1990s. The ferociously powerful car is regularly used on the road. At a rare public outing, it is seen here at the 2011 Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este. Roaring through its 'gun turret' exhausts the V12 engine provided the best sound track of the meeting.
