Chassis:
What is lost in time is the chassis number used for what presumably is the unique Chevron B16 Spyder. Brian Redman and Vic Elford raced the car with considerable success in Europe during the second half of 1970 with the former taking wins at Paul Ricard and Spa. The unique Chevron was then shipped to South Africa where Redman absolutely dominated the Springbok series, winning all six rounds with various co-drivers. It is believed that the car was subsequently updated to B19 specifications and its career continued into 1971 until it was crashed heavily and reportedly cut-up.
During the 1980s historic racer Don Shead acquired the B16 Spyder's original body and set about rebuilding the car around a new chassis. Shortly after the work was finished, he was offered what was claimed to be the Spyder's original chassis but could also have been the B19 frame used in 1971 to replace the destroyed B16 chassis. This was incorporated into the rebuild and at some point the car received the chassis number 'SP1' presumably to clear customs. Shead only raced the car a few times and the B16 Spyder has since passed through the hands of Chevron Cars ltd. and noted collector Joel Finn before it was acquired by the current owner in the late 1990s. He has extensively raced the car in historic events in the United States.
