Chassis:
Chassis 63.010 was built ahead of the 24 Hours of Le Mans to serve as the second Briggs Cunningham entry. It was entered for Walt Hansgen and Bruce McLaren. The race ended very early when Hansgen rolled the car at Tertre Rouge. The damage was repaired at the Maserati factory and the Tipo 63 was shipped to United States, perhaps re-stamped as 63.011. Hansgen drove the V12-engined machine to hard fought victories at Bridgehampton and Road America with Augie Pabst serving as co-driver in the latter.
At the end of the 1961 season the car was returned to Maserati and stayed at the factory until 1965, when it was sold as a rolling chassis. A Ford V8 was initially fitted before the car was restored with a Maserati four-cylinder engine. In this guise, the rare Tipo 63 was displayed for many years in Peter Kaus' Rosso Bianco museum. Shortly after the vast collection changed hands, the car was offered in the Bonhams' 2006 Gstaad Sale. It changed hands for an impressive CHF 640,000. At the time we were told that the original V12 does still exist, so hopefully chassis 63.010 will be restored to its race-winning configuration in the new future.
