Chassis:
One of two 935s built for the 1976 season, chassis 001 or 'R15' is the very first 935. As such it was extensively used for testing and development work. It was only pressed into service late in the year to help secure the world championship. At is competition debut it won the Watkins Glen round in the hands of Rolf Stommelen and Manfred Schurti. In the subsequent race at Dijon, it placed third behind its sister car and a Kremer-modified 934. This ensured Porsche won the World Championship; the first ever for a forced induction car.
While chassis 002 was retired to the factory museum, the very first 935 was sold to longtime Porsche representative Vasek Polak in California. He retained the car in original condition for almost two decades before selling it on to Houston-based collector John Kotts through Kevin Jeanette. After a lengthy pursuit, Porsche enthusiast Matt Drendel finally managed to acquire the rare works 935 in 2009. Unfortunately, due to his untimely death late in 2010, he could not enjoy the fabulous machine for long. Along with the rest of the collection, chassis 935-001 was offered by Gooding during their Amelia Island sale.
It was acquired by another major American Porsche collector. He had the car comprehensively restored to the Watkins Glen 6 Hours winning configuration. Once the work was completed, it was shown at the 2018 Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance.
