Established in Turin in 1918 as Ghia & Cariglio, this coachbuilder specialised in one-off coachworks. In the years after founder Giacinto Ghia's death in 1944, the company produced some very famous designs. Especially the 'Supersonic' coupes penned by Giovanni Savonuzzi are highly acclaimed. The company became world famous thanks to a series of show cars built for Chrysler. Between 1948 and 1957 a separate branch operated from Switzerland under the name 'Ghia-Aigle'. Under the creative leadership of Tom Tjaarda and later Giorgietto Giugiaro, Ghia penned the design for a variety of production cars for the likes of Maserati and DeTomaso. The latter bought the company in 1967 and three years later DeTomaso sold the coachbuilder to Ford. Since the mid 1970s the Ghia badge was applied to the luxury models in Ford's line-up.
