Vignale |
Having learned the trade at Stabilimenti Farina, master metal crafter Alfredo Vignale set up his own 'Carrozzeria' right after World War II at the tender age of 33. He relied on his friend and former colleague at Farina, Giovanni Michelotti, for the designs of his creations. The company's first big deal was landed in 1947 when Cisitalia commissioned Vignale to build the open version of the 202. In the following twenty years, the Turin based coach builder worked for all major Italian manufacturers. Highlights in Vignale's portofolio include the Ferrari based Barchettas and the Maserati 3500 GT Spyder. In the second half of the 1960s the demand for custom creations declined and the company was sold to DeTomaso, which together with Ford also owned coachbuilder Ghia. In the Vignale factory DeTomaso Pantera bodies were crafted, despite what the 'Ghia' badge on the car might suggest. In 1973 Ford bought both Ghia and Vignale and not a year later all of Vignale's assets were sold off. Just 56 years old, Alfredo Vignale had died in a crash just after selling his business to DeTomaso. |
