| Lotus El Camino |

A bit surprising the Europa didn't sell like crazy here in America, we love stylish pickup trucks. Uh, wait a minute. My bad! The Europa isn't some British take on a Chevy El Camino, it just looks like one. Why any mid-engine two-seater should do that is a bit puzzling. And a bit goofy. |
| Absolutely brilliant !! |

The Series 1 Europa was SUPER -- beautiful, sleek and fast, with superb handling. Apparently, there were only 300 made before the purity of the design was diluted. The raised front ride height and wood replacing the stark aluminum dash destroyed much of the car's appeal to me, and the protruding turn lamps and divided side windows did also. I owned 2 Series 1's, beginning in 1968, and particularly enjoyed shaming all the Porsche's at the autocrosses. What a brilliant piece of engineering, to create the 1300-pound Europa in 18 months and sell it at an affordable price! Wish I still owned one of mine today. John Bigler |
| A very strange car |

When I first saw it I thought it was ugly, but after a few minutes I realized that it is beautiful in its own way! It follows Lotus' lightweight tradition, and has a superb handling. With the the twincam-engine it become a great killer, but I think that it's enough with the Renault-engine and some well-sounding exhaust system. One of my dream cars, because it's unusual here in Sweden, and it looks like a special sportcar, the height is very low and it's fast. Finally a great car!!! |

"Comment from ""The engine didn't prove very quick.."": Although source vary 0-60mph is quoted in 9.3s and a maximum speed of 121 mph (195 kph). Not quick is certainly not true as contemporaries are considered. The S1 leaving all its vices aside had the most slippery shape of all Europas and in top speed it can only be equalled or better by the latest Special (type 74). The car was not penned by Ron Hickman. The body must be attributed to John Frayling and Peter Jackson of Specialized Mouldings. The second series S2 (type 54) and the US -federal- version (type 65) of that retained the Renault engine. These were however heavier and were not so aerodynamic that a little speed was lost. The TC (type 74) was quicker to 60 mph but slower in topspeed (117 mph). The special finally upped every spec. Production numbers S1 (type 46) 644 S2 (type 54) 2750 S2 Fed (type 65) 865 Type 74 TC 900 TC Fed 680Special 2080 Special Fed 2050 For more information on the S1 look at my site ""http://wizerd.nl/"" Ed Waalewijn """ |
