| 2.2 L N/A |
| Dan 14-6-2003 |
They didn't come only with 2.0 L engines. I live in California and I have 2.2 L N/A engine in my 91 MR2. I also have the manual, which was made for all models and it says that those cars came with two engines: 3S-GTE 2.0 L turbo 5S-FE 2.2 L N/A The manual didn't say the horsepower, but I know that turbo is around 200hp, and 2.2 L N/A (mine) is 135 HP |

For starters there were 3 basic engines produced - the 3S-FE, 119bhp good for a top speed of about 124mph, 0-60 in 9.3 seconds. These are fairly incommon in the UK - only produced for around 3 years. Secondly the version I have which is the 3S-GE which is a DOHC engine (like the others) and uses the T.V.I.S system producing 158bhp, top speed of 138mph and 0-60 in about 7.3 secs. This is the most common engine variant in the UK. Then there was the Turbo engine (None of which were available in Europe except for import) which like both the other Japanese and European models was a 2.0L engine (220bhp for the first revision) capable of speeds over 150mph (if de-restricted)and a 0-60 in less than 6.0 seconds (vary from about 5.3 secs upwards depending on GT or GT-S versions). For a precise figure visit the site mentioned in the review above which lists all the engine variants and figures. |

The 1990 onwards MR2 came equiped with either the NA 3SGE 2 litre twin cam 16v, or 3SGTE 2 litre twin cam 16v Turbo as also found in the Celica GT4! It ran a twin entry turbo, which at the time was unique to the 3SGTE engines only. Unless the MR2 was delivered to other countries in a 2.2ltr, then I am yet to see one myself. |

The facts about the Mr2 are false, concering the engine that is. The 3s-GTE engine is the Turbo eninge producing 200Hp and 200ftlbs. The NA MR2 was equipped with a 2.2L 4 producing 130Hp |
| Handling wasn't an issue |
| mr2 14-6-2002 |
"The first year or two it suffered from handling problems resulting in unpredictable handling at the limit It's generally considered that this urban myth is untrue - people who own the cars and have driven both the early and later cars usually agree that the revision 1 examples actually handle better on track and in the hands of a respectful driver. The issue is that journalists, used to FF and FR cars didn't adapt their driving style to the MR configuration of the SW20 MR2. As a result they lost the rear end by lifting mid corner etc. If you read reviews from real drivers they had nothing but praise - only the unskilled seem to have issues but alas these rumours have spread in the same way as the ""hairdresser"" tag the cars have. Having driven 91 and later revised 93+ cars I can only say that the earlier car is much more fun when driven properly. Yes the later car is more forgiving when driven wrongly but should you be behind the wheel if this is your style......? http://www.canweb.co.uk/mr2 """ |
