Pointless, but that's why I like it

The H2 is flooded with faults. It's got a drinking problem, it's a GM Tahoe underneath. It's outclassed by almost every real SUV you can think of. That's why I like it. It's the underdog. The styling is like a proper 4x4, boxy and simple, a refreshing change from porsche cayennes and VW touregs. Also, it's like a matchbox car, it makes you feel really childish and it's not the most expensive SUV in the world, far from it.

this car in my opinion is a school bus. i ahve personally been inside, played with al of the little gadgets, and even driven one, and i'm not that impressed. the looks of it are ok, but nothin special. it drink gas when u put any amount in it. it does have a much larger engine, but it's also not worth the price tag that GM slaps on it. say what u want, it's not for the needed, and isnt needed.

2 voempe: thanx for explaining the reason for the short over hang. i saw the pictures of the hummer's new H3T concept truck & the H2 SUT which will be launched as a 2005 model. a lot of people complain that the H2 doesnt perform like the H1. hummer had to make it more civilised bcoz of the customer's demands. the newer SUVs being released are focused on being more luxurious than the other rather than having better off roading capabilities. the no of h2s in the UAE is very less whereas the nos of land cruisers & nissan patrols , X5, range rover & M class is much bigger. since april 1300 cayennes have been sold here. nowadays SUVs are judged by their looks. in order to stay with the flow, hummer made the H2 the way it is. i love the H2 because its design is different from other suvs & has good off roading capabilities

@haseeb-exotic: Hummers are built to perform well off the road in the first place. Short overhangs at both the front and the rear of the vehicle are necessary for extreme hill climbing/descending. Otherwise the rig would get stuck with the front and rear

with luxury SUVs like escalades & range rovers, hummer were forced to make the H2 civilised.the h2 is not as roomy as the H1 & it doesnt look as though it can compete with H1 off the road but looks can be decieving.the H2 does perform pretty well offroad despite it being taller than the H1.I do like its bold looks but its end is too short. after the rear wheels it suddenly ends as if its rear was chopped off.it is large though, a black H2 passed right beside me & it was huge.i also saw a maroon H2 in a showroom.i really do like the h2 bcoz of its large size , cool looks & gr8 offroad capabilities.in dubai it costs 275k dhs.it is rumoured that hummer may produce a pick-up version of the h2.

It appears that a hummer does not need any regular service, otherwise your calculations should have included an item for that. As far as your estimate on fuel usage you might as well double the costs, 10/100 km is a very rosy figure unless you assume that it is diesel powered, which could be judging from the pump price you are using. The petrol version would be taking at least 20 litres per hundred k's if you are lucky. Anyway, in spite of what you say we Europeans generally do not want these cars, compared to this behemoth the Espace is a very small one. May be you should look for an old 505 or CX familiale, which three rows of seats. Friends of ours (four children as well) used a 505 for the past nine years and visited virtually every place in Europe. The car is now for sale. As far as the absolute costs are concerned, I think I would be able to manage, but it is such a waste of money, a token of anti-social behaviour. For these things the US is now trying to secure (at what expense) future oil supplies from the Middle East.
 Not enough space

Hi there all, as a Belgian daddy (4 kids) I need first of all, a lot of space in my car. I have now a Renault Espace, but I fell in love with either the H1 and the H2. The discussion that Europeans like or like not BIG cars, is quite stupid. Look at BMW, Mercedes, all the French cars (Renault,Citroen,Peugeot) as well the Italians build bigger and bigger cars. Why? To sell... There is only one problem with the Hummers in Europe, and that's the engine (6.5 litre), which causes a lot of high tax-rates. I have built a TCO (total cost of ownership) for a Belgian user over 4 years/120000kms for a new H1 in euros (1 euro =approx. 1 dollar) Price: 120000 Insurance all-in: 6000 a year = 24000 Taxes: subsription: 50000 one time road-taxes: 2500 a year = 10000 Fuel: 10litres/100km x 120000 = 12000 litres = 9600 (about 0,8/litre) Resale = 55000 To drive a Hummer H1 during 4 years I have to pay 158600 euros. For this price I can buy me a home to live in for 20 years, ten times the size of a Hummer H1. My Renault Espace costs me during the same 4 years 32800 euros. For the ones who hate a Hummer: be honest and say it is just too expensive. For the ones that can buy a Hummer but do not love it: Buy one for me! Cherio

What is wrong with these people? The Hummer H1 was one of the best automobiles ever made and now they disgrace the name Hummer with this thing this SUV. Who ever did this should be shot like the dog they are are buried in an unmarked grave in a corn field. Personaly I would rather pull a old army Hummer out of a junk yard after a missle was slamed into it, and all thats left is a tire and part of the frame. That would be a better Hummer than this thing.

I'm sorry but i personly think that any GMC should die for making this pardon my french but this peice of crap!! It's not evan made by hummer, its just another SUV with a little extra power with the hummer name, and thats costs more than its worth. Much more. its got a suburbin back and a ucon fron or the other way around but what ever its not a hummer. And I think it should DIE!!

Sorry all Hummer fans (including me), but this car is BAD. I was really lokking forward to a new hummer, and they come up whit this. OK, Hummer H2 has i more modern and fancyer lokk, but the driving skills is so dissapointing. I watched a car show where they tested this car, it couldn't drive up a hill which had a 20 degree angle. Thats the least we can expect from a Hummer!

I don't much like the H2 in looks and it's ground clearance seems too low for my work. But I got a feeling people are going to buy it because its a Hummer (only in name, from what I read) and it costs a lot less than H1. Slicky Silvio and His Merry Band of Robbers have not managed to raise the speed limits yet, just a matter of time. The only thing this law will change is to lower the work load on the highway police (and I suppose increase the work of the fire and ambulance dept!). You will be happy to know that his various tax amnisties have caused many banks in Ticino to close. Billions of Black Euros are flowing back to Italy. Unfortunately, there are now 7000 people unemployed as a direct consequence of his second tax amnesty in Ticino. Though, this is mainly the fault of the Ticinesi since they have not created alternatives. Example, 75 world class banks in Lugano, a town of about 50'000 people. The irony is that they are selling their Canton as a potential logistics base! I am sure Tissen is not one of those who voted the present local government !! Well, if my wife ever bought herself an H2 (Nightmare Scenario - God help all other drivers on the roads as her wake of destruction approaches!!) she would be able to drive to Sicily by 2010 since Slicky Silvio has approved the construction of the bridge linking mainland Italy to the Island. Traffic to and from the island will increase tenfold overnight. An environmental catastrophe but it wins votes.

I guess I cannot be hard on the H1 when it is used in the way you describe. It is purely a utilitarian vehicle and the Americans like a few extra amenities like this sat TV. These comments however are made on the vehicle called H2 SUV, and that's where things are going hopelessly wrong. If the H1 is available what's purpose of the H2, just to please the wives of the geologists to bring the kids to school? (not meant personally). When I drove through Italy I already assumed that Santa Silvio's new law of allowing 150 kph was already in force, and just going with the flow regularly gave me 170 or 180 on the dial. What the latest on this one? Personally I would not object to lifting the banking secrecy in Switzerland, I have nothing to hide (but can't afford a Ferrari) and the Swiss would finally be forced to set up a decent service industry.
 Hummer has a European role
Tissen
16-1-2003
Thanks Milano. I personally think most people are too hard on the H1. Many companies and agencies (forest and fire departments?) in Europe need such vehicles for work and the H1 gives these people another alternative. After all, there are many European models in the same category or in the same role. I confirm the Panda 4x4 is used by the Swiss postal service. Unfortunately, FIAT is no longer producing this very useful vehicle. As for scarce resources, science has always managed to solve the problem. It is economic viability that usually makes it impossible to implement immediately. Hydrogen powered H1?
 My Hummer
Milano
16-1-2003
I am a geologist by profession and no I do not use my Hummer on the highways much. I use it for work in hard to get places in the the Alps and Dolomiti Mountains. Helicopters used to be our prefered method of transport but the logistics are becoming too expensive (fuel, qualified pilots, weather conditions, limited time on target, etc). Italy can get very rugged. My collegues use Swiss Bucher Quads, Land Rovers, Cherokees, Iveco and Mercedes trucks and I have owned some of their models. I carry lots of equipment when I work and there is seldom room for more than two people in my H1. It's a sort of sonar and radar command post (for underground survey) where most of the equipment is permanently mounted in the H1 with my passenger acting as technical officer manning a couple of computer plasma screens. The H1 is just the perfect vehicle for the job. I can even pack a tent and open it on the roof, away from the rough ground and Bigfoot. Yikes!! It has all the sweet conforts from home including a fridge and satelite TV to watch the football matches. Who said geologists have to suffer on the job. Typically US Military - over engineered for most of the roles it is called upon to play by me and that gives me a great sense of security. The other trucks I owned were just as reliable but either not spacious enough, under powered or had a center of gravity that was too high (or the roof could not hold my home away from home). Don't be so hard on the H1, Henk4, it is the best vehicle for my job. It truely is technically superior to the competition in this role. As for our highways, yes the Center Lane Bandits are a big problem and no when I get the chance I do not respect the speed limits. The A26 highway that runs from Varese (Near Malpensa Airport, Milano) all the way to the French border on the coast used to be my favorite play ground to stretch the legs of my F355. It is now infested with police radar traps. But this only proves Tissen's point when he says that nobody respects Swiss traffic laws when we EU citizens pass through his country. Perhaps we should lighten up a little since if the Swiss ever decide to romove their banking secrecy a large chunk of EU citizens will be in big trouble with their fiscal authorities. Including me...

Just to convey to Tissen that I loath the German panzers just as much as he obviously does, (you make look at some earlier comments I made on the X5 and the Cayenne) but these were because of the American market rather than stimulated be European demand. Compared to the giants that emerge from the American factories however their size is still within limits. Having recently been to Switzerland to visit the Ferrari auction in Gstaad I was appalled by the sheer number of trucks that were waiting to cross the border at Basel. May be it is some sort of consolation for you to know that I am professionally involved in efforts to convince cargo owners that ships could be a good alternative, but currently the price mechanism will not favour this option. I think the Swiss should impose much higher tolls for transit traffic. To Milano i would like to say that judging from a recent trip from the Brennero to Naples, that also in Italy sticking to the speed limit is of lesser priority, while sticking to the middle lane can be considered as a national disease. I am glad about the favourable comments about the Panda, the Steyr Haflinger and the Unimog could also be included a acceptable alternatives. The Hummer however should never have made it to Europe, I hope Milano will keep it in Northern Africa, I don't want to encounter him on Italian roads.

Milano, the H1 you drive may be good for your needs of travelling to africa and such, but do you drive it on the highways that the comments are about? as an outsider looking in, though, the continent of europe as by far a more advanced highway system. The four-lane highway is something that very few of us in Oz actually experiance. One such example is the Stuart Highway that leads from Adelaide South Australia, to Darwin Northern Territory. This road is at it's widest when you ahve overtaking lanes attached to the sides of the main highway that is only a two-lane affair, and when you have road trains (four carraiges long) hogging the road, it seems futile to try and drive it. so quit you're bitching, things could be worse. Now as for the fact that Europeans love SUVs, again as an outsider, i concur. Many images i recieve from my British Car Magazines i read are of SUVs, used for the school run, or just to take the 10 mile trip to work in comfort. the same can be said for most people driving SUVs. peopel enjoy the comfort of driving where they can see everything, where thaty have the advantage in size, ETC. it makes them feel safe when they have the heavier, bigger car. The Fiat Panda 4X4 that the post service use is a great idea, it combines the usefulness and tried and true abilities of 4X4, with the practicality and size of a hatch, i think these sorts of vehicles are the way foward. and before i get letters form all the people living in urban centres complaining that they have motorways, for how long do they go on for? do they lead from one state to another? and not ones leading from NSW to QLD.
 Poor Swiss
Milano

There is some truth in what our Swiss friend Tissen is saying. A great big chunk of EU consumers love anything made in the USA. Indeed, this explains the success of many famous brands ranging from McDonald's to Tiffany's, via EuroDisney. I would also agree with him that the main North-South highway connecting Italy's rich industrial north and central europe slices right through Switzerland. This highway carries millions of lorries and trucks every year that have nothing to do with the Swiss. In fact, the EU is putting the Swiss under incredible pressure to enlarge the San Gottardo tunnel to increase the capacity of the highway. The same is true for the masses of turrists that use the same highway. The Swiss have very strict speed limits to protect the environment but we citizens of the EU consistently violate these, somewhat arogantly. The Swiss are afraid they will be burried under turnpikes and highways that, it is true, they use very little compared to the general traffice that passes over them. The fact that Switzerland is smack dab in between rich Bavaria, Lombardia, w. France and the emerging east is, therefore, both an economic blessing and a logistical nightmare. BACK TO CARS. In my modest opinion the best cars are Ferraris, the best bikes are Ducatis and the best off Roads are surely American. Second place in all these categories are Japanese auto makers. A distant third and last place are the Germans. Sure they are reliable but they are gray and boring and too expensive. I own a Ferrari F355 and it costs about the same as a top of the line Mercedes! I use it to go to work, to go buy the groceries and I used it to go on holiday to Portugal. No problem. I also own a Hummer H1 which I use to go on particularly difficult assignments in North Africa and in the many rugged and mountainous regions of Italy. It is truely a wonderful machine. The Hummer is THE off road vehicle. It eats the competition for breakfast. Oh and by the way, the Fiat Panda 4x4 is used by the Swiss Postal service to deliver the mail to remote mountain villages in the Alps. It is small, cheap and unbeatable in this role. Too bad FIAT discontinued it this year. One last word, Italian cheese is by far THE best cheese in Europe. Our Buffalo mik Mozzarella is unbeatable !! CIAO
 Europe loves BIG and BAD
Tissen
15-1-2003
The fact that German auto makers have decided to copy US auto makers in producing off road vehicles proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that I do speak for Europe when I say that Europeans love BIG and BAD. The USA builds the best BIG, BAD off roads that are designed for the outdoors. They build them to last, they look good and they are priced in a fair manner. No hastles and above all no BRAND TAX just cause it was designed in Germany. As for the rest of your solution, well I wouldn't be so drastic. We Swiss will keep our sea side friends to the South, all other means of access can be demolished. I also wanted to add that you do not make better cheese, as you stated in an earlier communication. We do, by far. Alpine air does wonders for our cows (between seasons only though, 'cause of all those panzers running around like headless chickens).
 full of contradictions

"First you state you do not use your highways. Secondly you accuse the nordic panzers of doing ""wonders"" to the Alpine environment and third your solution appears to be to select the largest gaz guzzelers in the world to be the best cars for Switzerland. My suggestion then is to close your borders, demolish your highways and continue to live in splendid isolation and do not claim to be speaking on behalf of the rest of Europe. """

"The whole year round our ""tiny"" four lane highways in Southern Switzerland and ""tiny"" six lane Highways in Northern Italy are clogged with North Europeans racing to the Sea side or the ski slopes. Their ""fuel efficient"" Mega-Cubic-Inch-Panzers do wonders for our Alpine region's air. If the decisions were left up to the Swiss you Northern Europeans would take trains through Austria to get to Italian beaches and we could close those ""tiny"" four lane Alpine highways that we do not use any way! The silent majority in Europe is tired of the old Europen methods of work and doing business WE prefer the American way. This is also reflected by the fact that we love American SUVS and no nonsense cars. That, by the way, is why all the Teutonic Panzer Producers (including Porsche. Sorry Ferrari doesn't make trucks) have copied the American auto makers and produce huge (and a bit delicate I may add) SUVS themselves. Its the market that decides and we have decided that the best Off Road vehicle is made in the USA at a fair price!!"""
 Europe in general?
henk4
13-1-2003
I would like to take exception from the idea that in Europe in general we love anything big coming from the USA. I thought that Switzerland has long ago decided only to speak on its own behalf, avoiding membership of both the UN and the European Union so a comment like this coming from Switzerland can be disregarded. Furthermore I find it strange that the choice in Switzerland is obviously only between big suvs or german panzers. For the tiny roads in Southern Switzerland or Northern Italy a Fiat Panda 4x4 would definitively be a better choice.

Dear USA, in our tiny Switzerland (and Europe in general) we LOVE your H1, H2 and generally any huge and powerfull machine made over States-side. OK, we have less space and our fuel costs more (thanks to our socialist tax and spend governments!) but I guarantee you we are sick and tired of seeing all these big boring and characterless Teutonic (read German) Panzers (read cars) racing all over our highways at breakneck speeds. It seems if it can't bomb down the highway at 180 Km/h then it isn't worth buying. Well we got lots of mountains over in S. Switzerland and N. Italy and lot's of agricultural land too. My thought is that he may have driven the Trabant, a simple, two-stroke car made by east germans during the cold war. Cheap, simple and a whole lot better than walking, only just however. Plus, after the wall fell, there were heaps of spare ones left over, as East germans dumped theire trabis and embraced nicer western cars!

Just read an interesting article in our newspaper, pointing at the (hypothetical) debate that is now going on in the USA about what car Jezus would haven driven. It appears that bumper stickers asking this question are already circulating. Somebody is quoted as having said that he would have probably driven a SUV because of the deserts and the hills in the holy land. (I suppose paved roads where non-existent by then). Now this has made others feel very much guilty about the gaz guzzling nature of these things, and now GM who is actively sponsering Christian groups has already announced that the Trailblazer by 2005 will have a 25% percent reduced fuel consumption. Obviously somebody seems to be waking up that this cannot go on. Alternatively I would like to see other suggestions about the make of car Jezus would have selected. I don't think the Enzo would have been his choice, actually he may have chosen something provocative like an Iranian made Hillman Hunter or a Turkish made Peugeot 405 (rear wheel driven). Any other suggestions?

Pnce again GM has found a way to screw up a car with potential. After seeing the new H2 i was totally apalled. For one, they could have kept some of the traditional hummer characteristics. The split winshield, the melallic look, and the ground clearance. Sure it has off-road capabilities but next time GM wants to mess with an american classic, go mess with the firebird.

Dutch, my friend, is spoken not in Switzerland, but in another country, which is even smaller and has a population over two times as dense. Also our cheese is much better. If I would live in Switzerland I would find advantages in having FWD, but with our highest point less than 1000 ft above sealevel, and half of the country pretty well paved with asphalt, no use what so ever and the vast majority of these things never ever gets off the road. Nevertheless, we are getting more and more of these useless things over here, even fitted with bullbars, probably just to be more effective against pedestrians, and what is for you probably the rarest of breeds, the cyclist. (I give you Lance Armstrong though, he is from Austin, Texas). This particular car can may be be used by GWB when he hits out into the desert to combat the axis of evil, (and at the same time putting the supply of precious crude oil to the USA greatly at risk), but I am afraid he will also choose something else.

With interest I read about the newly proposed legislation in California, aiming at reducing CO2 emissions. Apparently somebody seems to be waking up over there. Prime target groups of course would be the darlings of the Americans, the UV's and the trucks. In case you are interested about oil production/reserve figures, for the last two consecutive years the world production has exceeded the newly found reserves by a factor 4. This figure relates to the world outside North America. For the USA and Canada this factor will be even much higher. So keep on Suvving. Ironically, in Dutch a driver of a SUV would probably called a Sufferd, which is equivalent to idiot or moron. Do I need to say more?
