I love my holdens, always have and always will. With the success that the Monaro has gained over in America with the yanks, you gotta wonder how well a Holden Maloo would do badged as an El Camino.

The new Monaro/GTO has been spied and the good news for the Americans is that, yes, you finally get bonnet scoops. Also, for the Aussies, we get a proper update to thefront and back bumpers, keeping it more in line with the VY/Z model commodores. Both models also cop dual exhausts. Other than that at this stage everything stays the same(besides the addition of the Gen IV...eventually). PS the weight thing is just America, changes had to be made to the fuel tank (safety laws) and exhaust(gotta sound like a GTO) making the GTO heavier than its Monaro counterpart.

I autocrossed this car today and was pleasantly surprised. I am no fan of American muscle cars. In the early 90's I owned a then new Mustang GT. For the money, it was a heap of fun... for half an hour, then the pitiful ergonomics/N/V/H made it quite unbearable. It's been nothing but Eurosnobbery for me since. This new GTO is quite different. Its seating and pedal position are comparable to most European (MBMWAudi) sports sedans I've been in. The ride and handling are quite impressive. The negative surprise is that such a small car should weigh over 3600 lbs. My E55 weighs about that. The acceleration, therefore, is less than expected. Keep it under $30K with all the usual options and Pontiac may have a winner. The interior is too cheap to sell for more than that.
 Monaro is back. Game Over.

Good to see you Americans are finally getting a decent car over there, even if the badges are different. :) It may not have the same name, but the Holden Monaro is awesome whatever you call it. Why on earth would they want to change the headlights? They already did! And racing stripes? Good grief, that's just sad (no offence). If you want racing stripes, put some on the car yourself, don't complain about Holden not doing it. Holden. Drive On.

My wife and I sought out the new GTO at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, MI. We were sorely disappointed in the styling of the car. Yes, the GTO came out as a sleeper in the 60s, but given the heritage of innovation and setting standards, we really felt that this was just an overhyped Grand Am (or Stratus or etc.) look-alike. I'm not a GTO purist, so I was looking forward to Pontiac setting the Auto World on its ear again with the advent of the 2K3 MuscleCar. It's nothing like I had hoped. Powerful? Perhaps. But innovative? No. Pontiac had a fine opportunity and IMHO they've squandered it. - Kal-El

There is certainly more to a car's desireability than pure on-paper specs or styling. Different model cars, hell even different same model cars have idiosynchrosies about them that give that particular car it's charm. Sure car A has more impressive figures than car B, but if car B behaves in ways that make it appealing to you for whatever reason, then great! That's what makes owning particular cars so rewarding, it is the relationship that develops between you and the car, the way it makes you feel when driving it or even simply standing back and admiring it. While I personally feel this particular car lacks the soul of the original, I am sure there are many who find it a worthy successor to the title and if it brings them joy in ownership then it has accomplished it's mission. I feel there is no car on this planet that can totally escape criticism, no matter how trivial or glaring the fault. I say accept things for what they are and spend more time loving the cars that you do love, rather than hating the cars that you hate.

Yes, it does look like a Grand Am, and so what!? The GTO started off life in 1964 as a SLEEPER. It's supposed to pass of as just another elegand coupe among the sea of Accords and Camrys untill the Corvette LS1 shreds the tires and its 7 car lengths of the closest car 3 seconds after the light changes green. I hope the GTO is here to stay!!! God Bless Robert Lutz for bringing it back, now just tell him to speed up the development of the 5th gen. Camaro!

"Rumor has it that this new Pontiac GTO will be produced in Elizabeth, presumably in Australia. So that answers the question about ""a wholly Australian produced"" car. The problem GM has is that this new GTO looks too much like the mid-90s Pontiac Grand Am. Their front fascia looks way too similar. What GM should have done is brought over the Holden HSV Coupe GTS to America instead of modifying a Monaro CV8. They should make it exactly as it is ""Down Under"" except make it left-side drive. It would also be nice of GM to bring over the entire HSV lineup in left-side drive. GM did make a good move though by resurrecting the GTO with the demise of the god-like F-bodies (Camaro and Firebird)."""

i am an aussie and have been a big fans of holdens ever since i can remember. i am really impressed with the new HSV coupes or monaros that have inspired this pontiac to be sold in the states. all i've got too say is good work holden and keep up the new work. u's are really putting a death trap onto the australian made fords (even with the release of the 'barra'). its good to see that the imports are increasing.
GM reverts to rear wheel drive!

"Tucked away in the specs is the reference to how the forthcoming Pontiac GTO has rear wheel drive. That must reverse a trend to front wheel drive which the USA has seen in recent years. It sure sounds like a great Pontiac! How long before GM introduce other Holden Commodore-based derivatives such as the Holden ""Maloo"" utility vehicle (pick-up) onto the USA matket too? It was unclear to me, from the article, as to exactly where this vehicle will be manufactured. Given that it is rear wheel drive and to be produced only in limited numbers, I would imagine that this vehicle would be wholly Australian-made. Is that right?"""
