"As far as I know MB doesn't offer any of their cars with a good old Stick Shift. Which is rather disappointing because a munual transmission is so much more involving. Besides that a 6speed manual would weigh signifigantly less than the current 5speed autobox MB is using now; and the weigh of their cars is one of their biggest problems." |

"In the past, I've sung the praises of the sl55 up the no-sunshine. Now, the sl55 may have less torque but what with its reprogrammed ABC system and V8, delivers its power in a different manner to appeal to those wishing to get their brains in gear on the open road- however, I know theyre supposed to appeal to slightly different markets and provide healthy in-house competition, but is it reasonable to suggest taking the V12, but apply all the cool sl55 bits -brakes, ABC adjustment, exhaust system (maybe spoiler upgrades)etc... to conclude, we now have an even more torquey engine with the driveability/responses (hopefully)of an sl55. or is my argument a pointless exercise -i think so too- i just like to provoke a response PS does one really notice the difference between 590 and 515 pounds of turning force anyway? and why dont they fit the supercharged AMG engine in the latest CLK?- ill reveal my cynicism - because it would outperform their flagship cl and sl variants due to a lighter weight- its a shame -id like to see how it would fair -the latest does 60mph in just over 5secs in ""standard"" amg spec...imagine... (these questions aren't rhetorical- enquiring minds would like to know) Furthermore, sod both these cars- get a Brabus K8 and stuff them both. Drug dealers and successful traders who wish to look like they're drug dealers, need only apply- its those mean-looking spoiler additions and paint job i see on every brabus advertised ever - is silver not an option and only for those ""crazy guys"" over at the merc factory? im done...for now..." |
| 55 AMG or 600? |
| Penttila 10-2-2003 |
After all this 600 isn't very much different than the 55 AMG. Of course, it has a more kickass-engine, a 6-liter biturbo V12, and the 55 has a 5.5-liter compressor-V8 with some AMG-tuning, but they still haven't got much difference in horsepowers. I was actually quite surprised when I saw how much gas it spends liters/100 km. The 55 AMG spends about 14 liters, but the 600 spends less than 15.5 approximately (that's not even much compared to a Ferrari 360, for example!). So if you gotta choose between these two, I'd take the 600. I've seen what the CL 55's and 600's can do, and the 55 don't stand a chance, although its a kickass car, or maybe it's just because of the lousy drivers. Anyway, I think this is the king of convertibles. The Ferrari 360 may look better, but hey, who wouldn't want a 6 liter biturbo V12 instead of a V8? |

"Excellent car, excellent looks great piece of engeneering; I love the foldable metallic top (although they all look the same: SL,SLK and Lexus), but, maybe it's the fact that being produced in large numbers make it a common sight after some time, and so ...well I don't want to disappoint any of you MB fans, but a Ferrari or a Lamborghini, or a 996turbo or GT2 (or even a good Viper, something very rare to find here) are cars that draw my attention more than this SL. The fact is it shares way too many styling cues (rest assured excellent styling cues) with its parents cars (the headlights with CL, C, CLK, E, the roof design with the SLK) so even though U can tell the difference from the common cars, it's just not as evident as it is with those I mentioned above, sorry.""" |

ive never liked mercedes, and this is no exeption. as cool as a lot of people think this car is, i dont like it at all. all mercedes look the same, and theyre too common. i hate to go against what everyone else is sayin, but mercedes could be doin better with some of their newer models. however, the F400 is a very sweet lookin car, as wierd as it is. but as for this one, i dunno. i would use a picture of it in the bathroom, but not for looking at. |
| SL55/600 vs the 575M |
| ralliart77 16-12-2002 |
"This is my final verdict and i repeat that I shall not accept any futile arguments . A few days ago i had compared the Cl55/600 to a 575M. A lot of you rebutted my views amicably saying that they were both a different breed of cars. The CL being a ""Family Coupe"" and the 575M being, well a Ferrari, and comparing them was sacrilage! Correct me if I am wrong here but I see that the top end S-class family has overwhelmed the ""ferrari"" in all the basic figures. Take this baby for example, 500hp, 800nm of torque 1700kgs curb weight compared to that of the Ferrari....uhhh what ferrari? Also one of you had so vehemently discarded the fact that the CL55/600 would not even prove worthy to challenge the 575M on the track. Well I have news for you.. With the torque and hp that thiese cars pump out I would be suprised if it coudnt outrun the ferrari on the track. Specially this SL. Dont get me wrong though.I am not undermining the effort of Ferrari...a non turbo charged engine with almost the same displacement churning out so much power is creditable. But that is the whole point. Benz has created these tuned machines so that you could drive them in stop and go traffic and also go crazy on open roads. Also u get a lot of doodads and high flown electronics to help u not commit any mistake, and all in all it gives a hopeless driver a chance to experience the pleasures of a high performance car without boring a Huge hole in his pocket!""" |

the cl600. It is a much more practical and nicer looking car, really! To me all the SLs(350, 500, 55, 600)look the same, only the 55 is a bit different. I see sl500s almost everyday(although there are only 45 here in singapore)It uses exactly the same engine as the cl600 but only the acceleration times are different because the sl is a bit lighter. The interior of the sl is nothing compared to the cl. Look at all the lovely wood in the cl(wonderful) The sl to me has to much metal in the interior!! Long live the cl!!!!! |

Hell Yeah!!, now this is what I think of when some one sais 'SL'. I think of a V12 drop-top 2 seater. With an unmatched combination of Technology, Comfort, performance, and poise (read: style). I doubt they'll offer an AMG version of this car, at least not publicly. If they do, it will be much like the SL73 AMG in the past, it wont be in any brochure or catalog, it will be something requested by the customer and kept rather quiet around most of the automotive comunity. Although, to play the devils advocate, who needs an AMG version of this? Any AMG tuned V12 SL would be in in-direct competition to the upcoming Vision SLR. Although that will be lighter hopefully, it would still cut into the sales I emagine. This car however, fit complacently on top the Mercedes performance line up. It's faster than the AMG, has more torque and, in my opinion, a freindlier face. I emagine that the 4.6 sec 0-60 time is slightly under-rated... and with that much power and torque an unrestricted (no limiter) SL 600 would probably do in excess of 190. (I seriously doubt the suposed 200+ speed of the SL55). In anycase, I WANT ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

Another beauty from the boys at Benz. this is a worthy successor to the SL 55 and will no doubt become decked out in amg by the time it hits the salesroom floor. This is a beautiful, comfortable car that at the same time is able to be an amazing supercar, with blazing fast acceleration times. Well done again Mercedez Benz and I hope you keep coming out with cars like this in the future. This is the type of car that makes me strive harder to make a buck so I may one day drive one of these, even though that will never happen. |
