Not a car, not an SUV--yes!

"This looks like a great car and I can't wait to drive one when it finally shows up at my local Ford dealer. If Ford offers some options (a non-""luxury"" or sport model, sound systems, etc.) and can keep the price in the mid-$20K range, they'll likely have one sold with my name on it. I've been looking for something smaller than an SUV but more capable than a station wagon for my adventures in Northern Michigan and elsewhere. I really don't care about the ""convertability"" of the vehicle--as long as it will hold my roof rack for skis, kayaks, and bikes and still provide some gear space in the rear, that's all I'm concerned with. I would likely keep such a vehicle in ""station wagon"" mode. If Ford is gambling on fuel economy as an important issue to their target market, I really hope they will offer a manual transmission for those of us who still think driving is a pleasure and something more than just pointing a golf cart in the direction we want to go. And to address the question posed by the mullet-coifed, cowboy boot wearing Camaro guy about why we Gen-X's need to carry 250 lbs. of our stuff around, the answer is simple; rather than cruising urban streets trying to impress teenage girls with a cliche and aged ""muscle car"", we actually use our vehicles to take us somewhere to do something. It looks like the Freestyle will fit that bill nicely."

First. I hope they keep the touch pad for entry. For me, that is the geatest convenience for the active life. I always leave my keys in the car. Is this coming out as a Mercury or a Ford? I looked at the Chrysler Pacifica and it was nice but too pricey. I hope this stays in the low to mid 20's. Is this a replacement for the Taurus/Sable station wagons?

I definitely see the versatilty of this vehicle and its very attractive. Avalance? gas guzzler Subaru baja? couldnt fight its way out of a wet paper bag. I test drove one about 6 months ago. I was disgusted with the power of its engine. You would figure an automobile that meek would at least get decent gas mieage to compensate , NOPE!! Nevertheless, i hear the Freestyle's CVT tranny adds about 10% fuel economy as opposed to the traditional tranny. That may not be important to some but the amount i drive on a daily basis does make it so for me. Plus i want something that when im off from work i can have fun in and look good. The Avalanche could do that but its too Zues for me.Baja would of been a good all around if it wasnt for its meek nature.I will give it props though for its interior. Well , We all know what happened when Ford first came out with a new production of a concept(if you can catagorize the TBird like that) add$10000 to the tag and hope that the dealer will at least have the decency to lub up first before they bang ya. I was anxious about the 49 concept coming into production, but again i know the dealers would rape me with accessories that should be standard and other mark ups.Ford Dealers have always been the worst when it comes to that. HAHA it could be worse. at least Ford is Smart enough to have a CD player in most of thier base models unlike some other manufactureres that STILL install a tape deck. Who ine the hell listens to taped these days, esp in thier car/truck? Over all, if the price tag stays at about $24000 for the Freestyle , i would buy it , no doubt.Oh yeah before i go, i must comment on the Aviator , the mini navigator that actually costs more. what the hell is up with that?

This is exactly what one of the other reviewers described... a scaled down Chevy Avalanche. That said, I don't thing that's a bad thing. Avalanches are HUGE and ugly, but are very flexible and seem to have generated a lot of good press. As far as the Freestyle goes, I don't care for the glass roof over the back. While it probably offers far more rigidity than sheet metal, I feel much better with metal over my head than glass. I'm also not impressed with all those remote control activated motors moving all parts to re-configure the back end. Those things are probably just waiting to break. If Ford wants to make it more appealing, there ought to be a manual crank somewhere to move the windows down and forward (or how about rolling down the windows and then pulling some locking pins on the roof/D-pillars and manually pushing the whole thing forward -- sometimes simplicity is a good thing). I hope that all those gadgets (DVD players for the kids, navigation systems, leather seats, etc.) are going to be options. The front approach angle looks pretty good, but there doesn't appear to be much ground clearance there... perhaps Ford will have an off road package with smaller wheels/ larger tires and more ground clearance. In all the press photos that I've found of this car, they never show the rear (3rd row) seat up. Is it that uncomfortable, cramped, or poorly laid out that they are only willing to tell about it , but not show it? How about a cross-sectional drawing? Maybe the re-designs of the Land Rover Defenders will result in a real off road crew cab truck over here (a basic truck with simple parts and solid performance for what it is designed to do... not a hybrid of anything).

it is going to be impossible to car makers to fullfill all the needs of the people , and here is an example to do so, if the make this vehicle with one purpose only , a small pick up or a suv it will have good sales and of course an affordable price. As is it's like trying to have an swiss knive. Sometimes less is more.
 I love it!

If they came out with this car, I would definately buy it! I hope they keep the telescoping roof. I want the versatility. Otherwise, I'd be looking into some other station wagon.

"This is a cool concept for the ""active lifestyle"" person, but who cares? It's just a downsized version of the Avalanche. A SUV that semi-converts to a pickup. The market is so flooded with al;l these boxy overweight cars with SUV styling it's just redicilous. I need a Honda Element or Ford Escape like a fish needs a bicycle. I'll keep my RWD V8 1968 Camaro for the summers and my 1983 Hatchback Firebird beater for the winter and when I need to haul around something bulky... I don't even have a limited slip rear end in my Pontiac but I can get around in the winter fine because I have something many SUV drivers don't: common sense. Why do these Gen-X-ers insist on lugging around 250 lbs. of their crap everywhere they go???"
