I used to own a 99 Corvette convertible. I thought it was really fast until my friend with a 99 Lightning told me he could beat me in the 1/4 mile. Well, the rest is history. I now own a 03 Lightning. It has ran a best of [email protected]. I don't care who pulls up at the light it doesn't scare me a bit. I'm just waiting for the concept to become a reality. In fact the new Dodge SRT 10 doestn't bother me either. I'm just waiting for one to pull up next me with a smile on his face. It won't last long. The Chevy SS and the Dodge SRT 10 don't have a chance even before the concept comes out. Myself, I want to be on the top of the list for it. I'll keep my present Lightning also as a backup. The new Lightning will be one Bad A** truck. |

"Mopar lovers, move over. I own a 'O2 White Lightning and all I can say is remarkable. My times and numbers will keep up with the ""Viper Truck"" now so the new Lightning will undoubtedly show this truck who is BOSS. From the showroom floor, FORD and it's SVT division(mainly John Coletti) have done it again with the extra 50hp burst of cold air making it up to 550hp. I'd love to see the Mopar and Bowtie guys keep up with this one. The Lightning is also cheaper and a more bang for the buck than the Viper Truck or SS. Keep it up FORD!" |

whats all this bullsh_t being said about the dodge truck? where you can get 500 horses under the hood for less than a viper is worth..myself i wouldnt buy a $75,000 truck...the price tag is for retards or lack there of. If any of these dodge boys realized anything..superchargers is the thing of the future, stop living in the past. One might think Ford is using the easy way out on the supercharger, but look, with what weight to power ratio that the SRT has, it would lose cuz it weighs more than a pregnant cow does. The idea of having a smaller engine that pushes out the same amount of horses sounds quite great to me. So you dodge guys, get your heads outta the freggin nut and bolt bowl and lose some weight. |

*Gives car thumbs up* This is a great car for the price...if you need the fun of driving it anyways. *winks* I can't wait to get mine. I'm gonna see if I can boost the horsepower or something too. It would be awesome to have 800 horses packed in one of these things...hack, wit could probably ditch a Viper with that much power!! |

"The displacement issue revisited: Lightning = 1.51 H/P and Ft lbs torque per C/I (500 / 500 @ 330.1 C/I displacement) SRT = .98 H/P and 1.03 Ft lbs torque per C/I (500 / 525 @ 507 C/I displacement) Dodge's inadequacies would even be more pronounced had the Lightning's ratings been calculated with the Super Cooler activated! They should've named the SRT ""Thunder"". ""The Lightning does the work, the ""Thunder"" (Dodge) just makes noise!""" |

"Ford ie: the next Lightning, is running circles around you. I wouldn't think that making the same HP using 2.9 more liters and the corresponding additional fuel comsumption merits anything to brag about. Now, of course,I could've missed the article about the Viper w/ a truck bed being miserly or LEV! Back to the drawing board, or coloring books in this case! I guess Dodge will still pass everything except a gas station and a Lightining. ;O) The GM SS (Super Sh_t) is a joke and shouldn't be mentioned in the same area code as either the Lightning or the Dodge. The Dodge is a hot one but the Lightning wins! 428 CJ R Code" |
| 500 then supercooled... |
| prsrcokr 14-5-2003 |
To the guy how was trying to be bring psychometrics into account. You should reread the article. 500 hp was the listed power. Then they menton that if someone was to need more they could use the switchable Supercooler. Otherwise it is operating as a standard air/air Intercooler. I am not pushing Ford but am very impressed by this. Of course I want to see how it holds up before I would consider purchase. Air/Air is the most reliable form of cooling. Since it makes 500hp in this form you wouldn't miss the supercooler if not operational. Introduceing a complex setup like this is a risk and Ford is not known for complexity like this. Porsche has run A/C to the IC for years but they like to break down to. The fact is the lightning had a beast of a powerplant even if the supercooler were to fail. |

Ford rocks the truck market to shreds. They can tear up the competition with ingenuity and they can whoop up on Dodge or Chevrolet with trying. Ok the SRT-10 Dodge truck.... Hello it is a fricken Viper is all it is. It has the exact same drivetrain, transmission, and rear end as the Viper. To me it doesn't even qualify as a truck. It is a Viper with a truck body. The Lightning is purely a truck, with the soul of a monster. 500 horsepower from a 330 cu. in V-8. Now slap Ford's new 427 V-10 motor into it creating 590 ponies with only 7.0 liters, not 8.3. Ford still whoops up on Dodge even with that smaller motor. It was always said that the best mods to do to a mod motor is to supercharge it. The Cobra...4.6 liter supercharged...390 horsepower 12.8 in the 1/4 mile. Same time as the Corvette ZO6. Pure stupidity to put that against a 500 horsepower Viper. Now the new GT-40 on the other hand. The only competitor that would stand a chance against it is the Ferrari 360. C'mon Ford likes small motors with massive power. Supercharge the 427 and see what ya go. Bye bye Dodge, Bye bye Chevrolet. Ford still reigns with performance. |

always enlightening to read how fast courier services and pizza deliveries can take place in the States. I had no idea that this country was so consumer oriented. Seriously, this prejudice with BHP and torque in a purely utilitarian vehicle makes me laugh. (according to new grammar rules it appears that I have to put here LOL). Are we one day going to see 1000+ BHP Hummers on the road? |

Why is it that Dodge and Chevy get jealous about the SVT F-150 and they have to go and make their own. This is for the first comment on this page the guy brags about dodges srt10 and its raw power. So What The SVT F-150 is just as good, AND THERE IS NO PUSH BUTTON its called a pushing the pedal to the floor. You make it sound like it gets all of its insane horespower from a nitrous boost or something, ITS CALLED A SUPERCHARGER (It feeds the motor more air)I don't have a lightning but I do have a F-150XL Triton V-6 supercharged and some other goodies added to a factory 202HP motor. That now gives me 355HP. I just want to say one thing...FORD WILL ALWAYS BE THE FASTEST PRODUCTION TRUCK EVER MADE. |

"Ok... u can boost the power on the lightning... but u can do the same with the Ram SRT-10. Here are the facts man. They both have a six speed gearbox. The SRT-10 has more torque, 525, an extra 25 on the lighning. The horse power figures are the same. Ecept on the lightning u have to hit a button and then wait for it to recharge. What if your A/C goes out a few years down the road? Then how many horses will it have? I live on the south TX coast line, and the ungodly heat and year round 100% humidity is really hard on AC systems, and those 500 ponies in the lightning are dependant on it. The Dodge has 500 horses and 525 pount feet of torque when ever your right foot requests it (no button); at much lower RPM's than the lightning, so it's better in the midrange and more responsive. All that fun relieis soley on the engine (no AC system required). Not to mention that all that torque & power are pretty hard on a, relatively, small displacement engine like the ligtnings. And just so ya know. Enter coolers don't make that much of differance as to how much boost an egine can take. That is mostly determined by how well you've built up your bottom end. I don't know how built up the bottom is on this motor but I emagine it's some where between stock and extreme. But my point here is this, the Ford.... cool truck, cool technology. But the Dodge is one BAD ASS truck. Ford has great technology, but it's just not a badass. The dodge has it beat. Same power, more torque, and all of it available when ever u want it, at lower RPM's and no button to push. Dodge wins man, time the Ford guys realize it." |
| Lightning is top dawg... eat it haters! |

"The Lightning is reality! The Lightning has been in production for four years now. Power increases have taken place and more are in store. Ford haters endulge. There is no truck that tops the Lightning! Those who try are getting an A for effort, but an F for actually producing. (also Ford has challenged any company to out-power the Lighting...concepts are nice but production vehicles are reality) Silverado SS? What a joke. Anyone notice yet that this is the same truck as the GMC Sierra Denali. And how does this compete with the Lightning? All-Wheel drive is for yuppies in Cali who don't need 4WD, but are tired of being teased for driving a somewhat useless 2WD pick-up. This is also the same as the Cadillac Escalade, and the Yukon Denali... other AWD wonders. Let me tell you a secret about All-Wheel Drive. They are built for profit. Manufactures realized that they were losing $4,000 each time someone bought a 2WD SUV. There solution was simple. Make AWD with no available 2wd, 4wd or low-range, esentially making it useless unless you are racing your 6,000 lbs SUV around corners. AWD does corner better, but if we were really intersted in that wouldn't we but a sports car? That would help on the speed factor since they weigh less and are actually built to perform. In short, the Silverado SS is not a sports truck, it is heavy, high and slow! Eat it Chevy lovers. What can you expect. Chevy proved their intents recently by cancelling the Camero/Firebirds. All GM cars are FWD or AWD now except the Corvett. Any heritage nameplates have been degrated to FWD. Even the so-called SS versionare little more then embroided seats and ground effects... oh yeah they come with an extra $3,000 on the price tag, you know for bragging rights. That is ASS! GM is after the average consumer. Hints the name ""General"" Motors. The Dodge Ram SRT-10 Nice job Dodge. Fast, light, and reality. The only problem is the next generation Lighning. Thanks Dodge for doing this since you have made Ford respond. Now they are gonna make a 500hp/500 tq Lightning with a 6-speed manual. Lets hope it sells well to help push the introduction the of the next generation Lighning (now post-2005). Meanwhile lets watch how much HP the Lightning can make by turning that screw attached to the boost. An intercooled motor can take a lot of boost folks. Power is Power no matter how you get it." |
| Excellent, though it could be better |
| mustangcobraR 21-4-2003 |
though i am a ford fan, i agree with magnum. When is ford going to show pure raw power? and stop using supercharger kits. I dont mind them, but i'd prefer raw power, and no form of force-feeding. I reckon ford, i mean SVT should try putting in the 7 Litre V10 from the 427 sedan. Its got the same amount of torque but more power, heaps more power, though SVT can always reduce the power in favour of more torque with some tuning. Though i reckon there's most likely an air-flow kit or extractors fitted in it. Dont matter though, it's still naturally aspirated eh? |

I think that the new lightning concept is the best truck ever. since last year ford now has some competition chevy came out with the ss and dodge with the srt10 but i think that with the 6spd manual transmition ford will be in great shape against its competetors. the dodge srt10 is little lesS than o.k BUT the chevy ss certainly sucks SO I THINK THAT THE NEW LIGHTNING WILL KICK SOME ASS!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
| Perfect! |
| ds_carfan 19-3-2003 |
I will never understand how Ford can just do everything right with its truck line (unfortunately, that is all they can do perfect). The last Lightning was untouchable, and this one is 100% better! |
| What? |
| Magnum 440 18-3-2003 |
Why can't ford try accomplishing 500 hp without a supercharger? Heh, imagine what Dodge could do if they put some type of supercharger on their 8.3 litre engine. Besides, this looks like some oversised ford ranger. ford sucks yet again. |
| great idea... |
| BlackSunshine 17-3-2003 |
"The new ""super cooler"" set up's deffinately pretty cool. That sais something considering my personal loathing for Ford trucks. I've made it no secret to any one who's read my postings that I'm a HUGE Mopar fan. I think it's great that ford has found a way to keep up with Dodge in it's performance truck. All the same though, give me the Dodge any day of the weak. You can argue the whole displacement thing, and the technology crap, and your right, that's impressive. What really sells me on the Ram SRT-10, over this, is the fact that not only does it have 25 more lbsft of torque, but those 500 ponies in the dodge are available whenever your right foot wants em. These peak figures are also available at friendlier RPM's. So good job to all you boys in the blue oval group; but you aint sold me yet." |
| F-150 Lightening or Dodge Ram SRT10??? |
| dm2hot4u 17-3-2003 |
Man, trucks are getting all too hot these days. First there was the Ram, and now comes the F-150. Whatever, these trucks are cool, luxuriously equipped, and can scare the heck out of most cars when it comes to speed. The only drawback which I thick this market has is competition. Why the hell havent they got hold of the Ford Falcon XR8 sold in Australia? It may be significantly lower and smaller than both of these trucks, but it looks way cooler, and may even be faster than both in a straight line. Cmon Ford, you have to do your part!!! |
| Wahey! |
| Propercarnut 16-3-2003 |
Revealed at last. This has been on the cards for a very long time, nearly two years in fact. The engine that is. The truck itself has been built very recently around the new specifications of the F-150. This engine was designed as a direct result of Chevrolet's Silverado SST concept vehicle, which had the possibility of a 600hp V8 on the cards. Ford were a bit scared, and the new Viper powered Dodge Ram really put the wind up them. So this version of the lightening has been shown to the public, with, conveniently enough, 500hp, just like the Dodge. The lightening was the best in it's class for many years before such vehicles came along, and now SVT has made sure the Ford truck can retain it's position at the head of the field, quite literally. The SuperCooler system is a clever bit of kit too, even though it is rather inefficient. Most people I know fire a CO2 fire extinguisher at the intercooler before a drag start, but this does pretty much the same thing. The good thing is, the cold air being pumped into the intercooler from the air conditioning unit is more consistent, and can be maintained to keep a greater amount of air getting into the cylinders. Let's just hope this model comes into production fairly soon before the competition starts beating up on the Ford guys! |
