| how to talk about this wild car |
| edu. 8-1-2004 |
"im the ""Automotor"" magazine chief editor in bolivia and i probably won?t have the oportunity to see a slr and less, to drive one. but i saw this master piece and i was thinking: is that a mercedes benz? it looks, how acn i say it? controversial, but i think it?s design is terrific!!!! it?s performance is really great. the enzo is faster and ferrari will always be ferrari, but the slr is absolutely great car and you can smell all the cuality of this car. it?s a great german supercar. please, give me the keys!!!!" |
| this car seems a bit lost... |
| wasabi 5-12-2003 |
i say this because it doesn't seem to offer anything that the mighty SL55 AMG doesn't already provide. it's faster but then the two essentially use the same engine. how hard would it be to fit the new supercharger and intercoolers? you can't honestly say that this looks better then the AMG and that roof is pure poetry that makes the doors on this look clumbsy and dated. and what about the McLaren input? the more i read about this the less i see of McLaren the super-car makers/tuners and the more it looks like an AMG Mercedes with a McLaren badge on it. i'm sure it's an amazing engineering acievement and all that but i don't think i would choose this over the SL55 AMG. |
| What are they thinking? |
| Falconspeed 4-11-2003 |
"You all know how beatifull the originall 300slr is. Actually I think it is one of the most beatifull and sensational cars ever built. I mean direct fuell injection, 3000cc, 300horsepower, windbrake!! Know we live in the year 2003 and what do they come up with? They create one of the most terrible looking ""supercars"" I have ever seen!! It is a shame and people who will buy this car if they exist are, well ah, how can I say this civilised, tasteless!" |

"I placed my order for the SLR back in January of 1999 when it was still a concept car. Three + months ago we gave Mercedes a $50K non refundable deposit on the car. The origianl price in 1999 was to be around $ 150K. We now are at $350K give or take. MB has advised us that we can go to Woking England to get our ""back-end"" fitted for the seats if we'd like to. How crazy is that. We expect to see delivery of the SLR sometime Spring-Summer of 2004." |
| A worthy competitor to the maranello |
| hedge491 11-9-2003 |
I was never really crazy about mercedes. I always thought that they were not really drivers' cars, they were just showcases of wealth. Don't get me wrong, they are not bad cars, but, if I had the money, I would not buy one. However, I have to give credit where it's due: this car is great. One look at the car and its specs, and it takes no time to realize that this car is aimed straight at the maranello. One question has been plauging me for weeks now though. No one has been able to answer it. I contacted mercedes, but they did not reply. Most Mercedes cars use a 3 valve variable valve timing system. This car has 3 valve per cylinder, but I read, no variable valve timing. WHY? Why would they drop variable valve timing on a car, of which clearly, cost is not object? |
| cabrio?.....er NO! |
| Supercharged 26-7-2003 |
most peeps think that the SLR is jus a carbonfibre bodied SL55 AMG with a bit more power, and hence assume there is gonna be a cabrio. This is a totally different car , which has nothin in comon with the standard Sl's. The surrounds for the doors and the roof are one big piece known as the roof spider!,its one of the biggest most complex single carbonfibre moulding eva put in to production. The roof pilars with in this spider are foam filled and impact forces are channelled through the whole piece. Thats why there wont be an open SLR the whole structure would hav to be rebuilt and redesigned. And besides who cares if aint open topped ,cabrios are for hairdressers!! |
| best mrercedes ever |
| demttchouk 24-7-2003 |
at first i never really liked mercedes with that boring design. their concept vehicles are really nice but they rarely build them. the CLK GTR was the first mercedes to catch my eye. then came the MB vision slr concept and it was totaly awesome. its awesome that mercedes is finally getting a really exciting car. nice design and engine. |

"Sound of a SLR? Hell we?ve driven a SL 55 with the AMG Soundpackage III and this baby groozzles as hell (You?ll never need the Bose Soundsystem cause all you wanna hear is the sound of the V8 ;)). And this one has more power, more torque and Sidepipes. It WILL kick ass, that?s for shure ;). Who said that the SLR isn?t a Cabrio??? Are you nuts? It IS a cabrio just like the SL series. Ok I?ve got to admit the current generation of german cars are filled with some masterpieces and the SL/CL/S/CLK/E/SLR series of Mercedes are shurely some of them." |

The SLR is supposed to be officially released at the Frankfurt auto show this year, I think, but the waiting list is already hella long. There are a couple test cars flying around out there but they're mostly in Germany and on test tracks. However, i have seen that one guy took an old Mercedes and dressed it up so much (he built all the panels and stuff), the car looks exactly like the Vision SLR, not quite the production car that begins deliver early next year. Is anyone out there rich enough to give me about 250000 London pounds? |
| Batman? What kind of name... |
| DwZX35 19-7-2003 |
Dude, who gives a crap if it doesnt make much noise? Obviously they need the tires changed to do a burnout, seconf of all, its bullshit that you say you saw one of these, because they arent in production as of yet (corrections anyone?). Dont say it sucks if it doesnt make noises, it could kick the crap out of any car you'll ever own. |
| This is a beautiful car. |
| Hawke82 18-7-2003 |
Mercedes is making the kind of cars I wish BMW still made! While Bangle continues to ruin BMW's image, Mercedes will be stealing their customers away with these new sexy, always well made cars, that aren't visually embarrasing to own! |
| Wake up Batman |
| senna 4 ever 18-7-2003 |
Hey Batman you are a fool ,this car is still in the preproduction devlopment stage and nothing has been passed in yet but when it is ready for production it will sound and go like a wild animal chasing it's prey ready to kill............. |
| ITS OK.... |

No doubt this car has perfomance, style, handling, and appeal...but I think that Mercedes, with help from McLaren could produce a car a bit more extravogant. Sure this car has a ton of power, but it looks comparibly similar to an SL55 AMG, which is a quarter of the price, and only is short 107 HP, and comes with a hardtop convertible. For the money this car costs, I could purchase a Lamborghini Murcilago and have some money left over to buy my groceries, etc. There are many cars I would take over this Mercedes for the same money, give or take $50,000.00 (lol I'm not rich but oh well). I'm just saying that with the help of McLaren (who produced the OUTSTANDING F1 and F1 LM road cars, as well as the GTR) they could have made a more ferocious, aggressive, overpowering monster, rather than a quiet, casual, tourer. If I wanted a grand tourer, I'd just pick up an Aston Martin V12 Vanquish (The nicest automobile around). |
| love it |
| JiggaStyles09 17-7-2003 |
"Batman i think you are wrong about the ""quietness"" of this car. If you read the article that edmunds.com did about the car they give you a very different story. They say that the car sounds like an old muscle car rather than the high revving higher pitched sounds that a ferrari gives you. And that seems like a dumb reason to not like a car anyway or to say it ""sucks."" this is one hell of a car. regardless of how loud it is, it is still fast as hell and looks great." |
| Best of both worlds |

McLaren and Mercedes love child finally comes to life , and its beautiful!!! (i never thought i'd eva say that about a modern merc!!)> Its been well worth the wait, here we have a car that has performance to out do lamborghinis and ferrari's yet still has the reliablity and high quality that is assoiciated with german cars. I heard there had been alot of disagreements between the merc and McLaren engineers, gordan murry imposed a strict 1400kg weight limit on the SLR , but the Mercedes top brass wanted the car to meet its high safety standards, and rigorous quality assesment and still have all the creature comferts, with the addition of air conditionin , air bags, comfertable seats etc the weight got pushed up to ova 1600kg. But even with and extra 200kg to haul around the SLR still manages to to do 0-62 in 3.8 secs and 0-100 in jus ova 7.0 (top gear mag stats), sure there are other cars that could better that, but the SLR is the type of car u could drive around on a daily basis, unlike most other high perfomance cars which mostly only get used on weekends. As for the transmission well im aslo a bit baffaled as to why they choose a 5 speed gear box, but i rekon its cos merc wanted there costumers to hav a car, that is more user friendly, one that doesnt required the driver to hav years of experiance and skill to use, sure part of the thrill of havin a super car is to learn how to tame it, but hey its a merc after all! |
| This car sucks |
| Batman 17-7-2003 |
I saw this car at the weekend at Goodwood and you could'nt even hear it when it did a burnout. If you pay for such a powerful car with a big beefy engine you wana be able 2 hear it dont you? |

Actually it was Motor Trend who had the Enzo's 0-60 time as 3.14 seconds. Road and Track set the Enzo's time at 3.3 seconds. But, I want to agree with some of you too. The SLR is one BAD-ASS looking car, and my family, who currently owns 2 mercs has never experienced a breakdown in a mercedes. Not even our 300td that has 350,000 miles on it! Hopefully our 1999 E320 will be just as reliable... |
| Pfft. |
| SFXman 16-7-2003 |
Those differences you stated, rlinebacker, about the Enzo and SLR definately mean jack to me either. Imho, the Enzo looks absolutely dreadful and would take the SLR over the Enzo any day. |
| rlinebacker45 |
| Black_Sunshine 16-7-2003 |
It's more than .4 seconds slower to 60. It was either Road & Track or Car & Driver that tested it with a 0-6 of something like 3.18! Don't get me wrong, I really dig this car, but I'd rather have the Enzo. |
| ferrari beater |
| rlinebacker45 16-7-2003 |
Ya, the enzo might be .4 of a second faster quicker to 60 than the slr. And have a top speed 12 mph faster than the slr, i would take the slr over the enzo anyday. Better looking, better quality, and just barely slower, the mercedes wins. |

"If your talking about power output... then yeah... Mercedes is closing the gap on itself. But what really makes this car a super car is not the power, although that certainly doesn't hurt, but the weight. Seeing as how pretty much every Mercedes I'm aware of, is rather portly to say the least (in terms of performance cars), the aluminum & carbon fiber body helps to set this car apart every bit as much as the engine. My only real gripe about the whole thing is the damn transmision. A 5 SPEED AUTO?!? What the hell kind of performanca cark, muchless supercar, doesn't even offer a standard transmission? Although I understand this thing acts just like a clutchless munual, and I don't mean one of those cheasy ways magazine ads would have you beleive. It will not upshit at red line unless u tell it to, nor downshift unless told to. It lets the egine rev limiter control things rather than taking action on it's own like all the other ""semi-automatic"" gear boxes. But why not a 6 speed? Or at least OFFER a good ol'fasioned clutch & shifter. All things considered though... it's lookin to be one badass car." |
| High Expectation made difficult by itself... |
| RacingManiac 8-7-2003 |
"After the likes of other Mercedes product such as the SL55 or the CL65, the SLR had to exceed the standard set by those to justify its existance. As the gap between those ""cheaper"" model with this exclusive model is quite small now..." |
| Beat that Enzo!!! |
| dm2hot4u 7-7-2003 |
See Ferrari, you CAN make a car which is lightening fast while making it look good at the same time. This is indeed is a worthy successor to the SLR's of the 50's - good looks, great versitility and blistering performance!!! |
