"I have been a BMW fan for years, ever since my parents purchased a 1985 323i and I got the chance to drive it on a regular basis as a teenager. Since I design cars as a hobby, I have followed BMW designs for years. I was shocked at first by the modernity of the e36 3-series, but it grew on me and I believe today it was one of the most important design steps by BMW, bringing it into modernity. It's the same step Chris Bangle is taking yo bring BMW into the 21st century. It's a bold move, especially with ""purists"" (or should I say with conservatives) but let's not forget that BMW has always been the most daring of all the german brands, fact that was forgotten by their management for the last few years... Of course new designs at first seem controversial. But in the end, it's what makes a company stand out and lead (just look at the derivative designs from mercedes-benz where no one can distinguish between a c, e or s class: Predictable and boring). With new designs, there will be misses (7 series), but there will be hits: the new 6 series. All the styling cues that makes a BMW are here: the double kidney grille, the round headlamp, the typical rear side window curve... but have beem reinterpreted modern way. The overall shape looks fresh and dynamic. And of course there is the famous trunk: no one can deny its newness with its complex curves and duck tail(please do not compare it to the pontiac sunfire, whose rear end is rounded but by no means as interesting, but more to the ferrari 550 Maranello and ask yourself which rear end looks more interesting). With the 5-series and upcoming 3-series, this new design language is here to stay, so we'll better get used to it... Chris Bangle in my eyes has made BMW designs cutting edge again and more modern than the ones at Audi, Mercedes, and especially Jaguar that have become all too derivative... therefore BORING." |
| Why do u keep doing that? |
| GeaKana 17-8-2003 |
Why do u keep comparing this car to the Mercedes CLK?Haven't u realised yet that the CLK is the 3-series coupe competitor? For the 6-series there will be the Mercedes CLE due to be released next year which will be the first ever 4-door coupe(I know that sound strange but that's how they're advertising it LOL) |
| doubtful |
| haseeb-exotic 12-8-2003 |
im doubtful about the 6 series front looks. its rear is nice & its roof lines are excellent.i read in bmwworld.com that there is a convertible version coming soon.i sense a strong competition with the mercedes clk coupe & cabrio.the air intakes on its front bumper makes it look bulky rather than sporty.i also noticed the i drive knob in the right bottom corner of the 6th picture. |
| Looking forward to it |

I have had two 3 series convertibles and wanted to move up, so ordered a 2004 Mercedes CLK 500 convertible over a year ago, which has not yet come. It looks too much like a 330 ci or Volvo C70. About that time, I heard that the 6 series was going to come back--that was a great looking car in its day. I used to drive my chevy cavalier to the BMW dealership and admire the car in the 80's. I am now first on the list for a 645ci convertible and hope to be tooting around in it next summer. I love the idea of a larger car, which is still a high performance car. The styling is sleek, and despite the many comments about the new 5 and 7 series, I am glad to be staying with BMW. They make a great driving machine. |
| ugly |
| Chumpsteak 29-7-2003 |
I really dont like this car's styling. It looks as if BMW have tried to combine the look of the Z4 and the 7 series together. They should have taken up more styling cues from the original 6 series. Even so, if its only half as good as the 635 it'll still be a great car. |
| awesome |
| demttchouk 24-7-2003 |
awesome car. the design is nice and clean and fits in real nice with the Z4, new 5 series, and the 7 series. it has nice gearboxes and a nice interior but i hope they dont use that stupid i drive. the bad thing is if bmw wanted to make a grand tourer out of this it is behind on power. they should have taken the M5's V8. |
| Bang up job by the bangle house |
| Bahumut 21-7-2003 |
Personally, I think Chris Bangle's design concept is a great fit for the BMW name. Every great car should evolve, and i think with performance, it's looks should as well. Other car manufacturers have been producing some questionable looking updates to their line lately, and BMW is not the first, but out of the many, i think Bangle's designs look the best. Classic cars always grabbed my attention with crisp, flowing lines that carved their path from front to back, and the Bangle-MWs definitely have that. Besides, the last gen BMWs were too conservative. I saw an E39 M5 last night, and .. well, Boring! The new cars definitely stand out, hinting at class and power versus covering it up until you got in the cockpit and stepped on the accelerator. My 2 cents anyway.. |
| blaze is partially correct |
| originalname 20-7-2003 |
blaze, you are right to say that the m3's suspension is acceptable for everyday driving, i guess i just forgot because my friend who owns one is 17 and rarely turns off sport mode. (we took out the electronic limiter and hit 170 mph, absolutely awesome). but anyways, there are plenty of higher output v8s than bmw's, but they can only be found in other european cars. you are right to say that bmw does have good torque and hp, especially if they keep the price sub 60k (US dollars) but maserati just released its quattroporte with a 4.2L, 400hp, 330 lb-ft, powerplant. audi also has its 4.2L s8 with 360hp (dont remember the torque). so while this car is an excellent balance of technology and power, it doesn't really have the best v8. |
| bmw is deying |
| shoura20 20-7-2003 |
iam really feeling so bad ,the car is looking so ugly especially from the back ,this guy is killing something called a bmw , i hope that the coming 3 series won't be like them the new {7,5,6series,and z4}which are a big shame . |
| Another Bangle design nightmare! |
| Hawke82 18-7-2003 |
Ugh! It looks like a Pontiac Grand Prix, with a rear spoiler from an 85 Mustang G.T. How can BMW release such a brilliant car as the new Mini, yet continue to come out with ugly cars like the latest 7 series, the incredibly akward looking Z4, and the new 5 and 6 series? The whole line is beginning to look like an upscale version of G.M.'s Pontiac division. |
| beautiful car |
| Blaze_667 18-7-2003 |
"i dont know what you are talking about. Personally i think the 6 series is a gorgeous car. But like any and all cars, its a matter of opinion. As for the ""low output v8"", no one else except for the ferrari 360 has a better v8 then bmw. 4.4 L, 326 bhp with an equal amount of torque. This car will blow the doors of the mercedes clk500, and is bigger. And there will be an M variant probably sharing the next generation M5's 5.5 L v-10, and like the M3, it will have sportier and stiffer suspension. however you were wrong about the M3's suspension. the M3's ride is actually quite compliant until you press the sport button and start pushing it." |
| They almost did it again.. |
| Tiffosi 18-7-2003 |
When I saw the BMW M3 a few years ago I got in love with it...you know it?s not very difficult. With this BMW 645ci it?s not the same, it?s a different concept of a car, may be less sportive but who won?t like to have this beauty on our garages?? |
| Nice and I don't really like BMW's |
| ram26014 17-7-2003 |
I must say this is a very nice car. I like it mostly becouse it's a real drivers car, becouse of the V8 and 6 speed manual trany. Of course the fact that it has 333hp don't hurt ether. Yeah and here is a little fact that I just found out about BMW the other day. The symbol on the front of the car actually means something. You see the BMW company used to make airplains during the war, then when the war was over they started making cars. So the blue in the symbol stands for the sky, and the silver stands for the blades on the airplains. I don't know how many people know that so i thought i would share. |
| umm |
| originalname 15-7-2003 |
gnafu, i realize that people on this page sometimes don't know what they are talking about, even though many people are capable of having intelligent discussions, but are you seriously telling me you think this car is an m3? the m3 is taught, tuned and athletic. it has a high specific output, fast-reving inline 6 cylinder engine, excellent balance with a sporting-hard bmw suspension. the m3 is an awesome competitor with porsche 911s (NA models). though stats mean nothing, but just for your education, the m3 can do about a 13 sec quarter mile and can hit 62mph/100kph in sub 5 seconds. this ugly new car is, like you noticed, less agressive looking. the car also happens to be less agressive. it has a low specific output v8 and sort of a touring feel to it. the car weighs more, has an annoying idrive system in it to deter anyone who takes a test drive, and because of the v8 and larger interior it will probably compete with the new s4. i can happily say the new s4 will easily best this car in appeal and performance. i hope you are now educated. - o-name |
| M3? |
| ostrolphant 15-7-2003 |
This is not just an M3, it is on a different chasis, with a V8, not an I6, and it is heavier than an M3. yes it have virtually the same horsepower, but every thing else is different. |
| Drop Dead Gorgeous!!! |
| Dasche 14-7-2003 |
This vehicle is absolutely gorgeous... styling is always top priority when I make vehicle purchases. They have some how transformed the beastly styling of the 7 series into a beauty!!! A few more years and the kids should be out of the house, this is definitely an adult fun mobile, can't wait to see the unveiled convertible!! |
| This is just an M3... |
| Gnafu the Great 14-7-2003 |
...and it doesn't look as good, either. This is nice, I admit. If it costs less than the M3, great! But otherwise, that's all it is. If it costs about the same or more, what's the point? I'm not one to put down BMW, so don't think that's what I'm doing. I love BMW, and this looks like a fantastic car. I just find it odd that they aren't just calling it the new M3. What I want to see is info on the M6, I read a small article for it in a magazine. Supposedly has 500hp :O! Anyway, nice car. I love BMW )^_^(. |
| Taxi - pack Back |
| Maranelloman 14-7-2003 |
This car is one of Bangle's better efforts, it cannot compare to the 5, but is better than the sartled fish Z4. However there are a couple of flaws (in my opinion), like the boot,it looks like something from the back of a taxi (same with the 7 series). Also the front is kind of bolbus. However i can imagine the engines will be BMW 's typical perfection. Too bad about the interior which is light years behind Audi and its (apparentley) superior MMI system. |
| ? |
| crisis 14-7-2003 |
The shape of the body from profile looks quite good, very Porsche like. But the rear looks like a large clumsy spoiler. In fact we have similar looking moulding attached to the boot lids of taxis for advertising purposes. That particular design feature is the most ugly part of the 7 series. The front is no better with a Hyundai-esque grille and what are those lights? BMW have come up with some great, if conservative designs in the past. Maybe thats what they are best at . Conservative. I wonder if the people who express their enthusiasm about this design, yet disliked the 7 series are not a little blinded by the holy blue and white propeller. |
| Looking the other way |
| wanam3 13-7-2003 |
Have been a BMW fan since the early 60's and am no fan of the new Bangle designs. This one is once again butt ugly. I could live with the front, but the rear looks tacked on. In the past BMW could rely on the edge it had over the competition in handling and performance, but that is now being eclipsed by Audi and approached by the likes of Infinity and Lexus. I'm glad so many like it, but it is not on my list of well designed vehicles. They've succeeded in ruining every design since Bangle got there and this one is no different. |
| probably my next car! |
| Lennon 12-7-2003 |
now that my daughter has left the house, leaving my wife and me with only our 17-year old son, i don't need a big 4-door saloon like the new 5-series anymore. and i am not that enthousiastic about this new 5- series.it looks too much nissan primera i think. but this new 645ci is all that i need. it looks great, it shows power and speed. it is a true beamer. a great car. |
| Z9 concept |
| SpEEd_DeMoN 11-7-2003 |
This is great... simply excuisite... i liked it when it was still the Z9 concept.. and i still like it now...BMW is doing great things with those rears ends.. |
| Xcellent! |
| Rad 11-7-2003 |
This is one of the most beautiful BMW's i've ever seen. It's been a log time since BMW built a really big sports car, really sleek.Go BMW!!! |
| finally |
| supernatey13 11-7-2003 |
"i recently posted a comment on the new x3, and the jest of it was that a revolutionary vehicle doesnt have to be ugly, this theory is shown here. this is the best looking bangle design i have seen, yet it accomplishes what BMW has set out to do, redefine itself and cover new ground in automobile making. i think the simplicity of the cars design (as compared to that of the 7,5, and z4) really makes the car extremely appealing and very beautiful. i think that this is a step in the right direction, good job Mr.Bangle, this is one beautiful car, and im sure it will more than handle its own to keep up with the BMW promise, that it will be in fact "" the ultimate driving machine.""" |
| Amazing, but with a flaw |
| Subwoofa 10-7-2003 |
I guess i can get used to those ugly ass headlight but wow, this is a real surprise...i was starting to like benz more than beemer but now my opinion has been leveled out. That rear of this car looks amazing, a real design with the dual exhaust. I don't even think the 7 series has that but im wondering the price of one of these babys, this is my new favourite beemer, but again, those headlights look buck ugly. The V8 engine is also a major surprise...good work BMW |
| Keep Going |
| Dodge Man 10-7-2003 |
This car is absolutely great, just like all the other creations of Chris Bangle. I think all the people who arent convinced of his great capacities arent good by their mind. |
| Amazing!!! |
| AnGrrr 10-7-2003 |
Re-introducing the 6-series, bmw aims at -in my opinion- overtaking MB at the hp and power race. Tough job... Anyway this baby's nice, but I prefer however a cl 600. BM (re-)starts 6xx with v8... good! |
| Great |
| DwZX35 10-7-2003 |
This is like the 7-series, only with a beautiful rear, certainly an incedible BMW, im very impressed |
| i guess we can't judge the book by its cover |
| originalname 10-7-2003 |
"i am so happy that bmw is progressing technologically and innovating their design models with new ideas on how to mix power, comfort, and agility. The valvetronic engine is awesome, though i would like to see companies other than audi with 5 valve per cylinder technology. the interior seems to be cleaned up a bit from the rather poor m3 interior (and i know that first-hand, a good friend of mine owns an m3). Let's hope second-gen idrive is better than the first, but overall the company is expanding their technological arsenal and enticing buyers with power and refinement. oh and yes, the 50:50 weight distribution, which used to be found only on the m5, should be a plus. but back to enticing buyers, bmw still has that wrench in the spokes, yes i am referring to styling. from a distance the overall curves are nice, but move closer to the car and you can see its bloated proportions front and rear. just look at how busy the sides are with that extra curve of the ""melted"" trunk. the front lights are acceptable, even if they are a bit odd, but the rear loses bmw dna and has become asian. bangle said they were done with cookie-cutter cars, but this one shares enough lines with the 5 series to be ""cut from the same cookie."" so please bangle, while your company is enticing buyers with its innovations (like that torquey and powerful v8) your are ruining the appeal with your designs. at least when bmw used to cut cars from the same cookie, they all shared good looks, not bad ones. i have said my piece, thanx for listening. o-name" |
| This is stunning! |
| mc_blue 10-7-2003 |
Personally i think that this Bangle design is the most successful of all. When the 7-Series arrived for example i was not too impressed. But this machine does impress me greatly. i have already put my name down at the dealership! |
| it's new, it's good, it's nice |
| alme7law 10-7-2003 |
it's really good, it's a new jump for BMW. but I think that it's a good jump to BMW. I hope that it will suit for ever thing, but I hope that it don't come on Z4. |
