I agree with mr 'Fhaas' that a wing is not necessary technologically - the road-version TVR Cerbera Spped Twelve doesnt need one! But i do however believe that the wing on an EVO is a large part of an EVO - like not having alloys on an M3. Without the wing it does look like any other japanese saloon - but i do agree that its good for mitsubishi to give the option. The Evo VIII (and VII) are both examples of an marked aesthetic improvement in japanese cars. previously the only motive for buying japanese was reliability and good dealership service - now they're raising their game. Although European cars are still ahead in terms of class, desirability and status, the japanese are catching up - a good thing as it will increase competition. BMW, with their Chris Bangle designed abomnations, have helped shrink the gap no doubt! In short the Evo VIII now offers good looks in conjunction with the pre-established coctail of insane performance and value - fantastic! |

"I'm in the market for an AWD car and have considered both the subie STI and the EVO for purchase to replace my aging Audi Quattro. I like the subaru's power and handling.... but am turned off by the big wing & hood scoop, which the dealer tells me cannot be removed or it will void my warranty! So I started looking around and found the Evo RS. At least Mitsubishi realizes that many would be owners really don't care for such obstentatious tack ons designed for the sub 25 year old crowd. All I want is a high performance sedan that does what it's intended to do...... not one that makes one wonder how big my private parts are. Do you see a big wing on the rear of a 340 hp Audi S4 or a 450 hp RS6? Nope. These large rear wings really don't have any serious effect at road legal speeds and are best left for track play time at speeds of 120+ mph. 95% of my time is on the street.... where the rear wing is basically useless. Kudo's to Mitsubishi for offering an alternative to those that want performance but prefer the ""sleeper"" look. I hope to have one in my garage soon...." |

Where's the wing?! The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII and all of its Evo predecessors are very sable machines due to thier superb suspension geometry. All of them (Bar the origional Lancer and the Evo VIII RS) have had towering rear wings, it has become a trademark almost. The RS is the stripped out version, the wing is dumped to get rid of as much weight as is possible. But without the rear wing the car looks...incomplete, almost ugly. It just looks like an ugly sedan. It no longer looks like the agressive, trackday machine we all know and love. The wing (If made from carbon fibre) cannot weigh that much can it? I reckon they should have left it on even with the defictit on acceleration and top speed it would impose. This adverse affect would be minute anyway, scarifice 0.1 seconds or so on the 0-60 time and bring back the rear wing. |

this car should be even faster than the standard Evo in straights. How is it gonna be stable without a rear wing? |
