I afree with Exige. I own one and I'd never think to take a Viper over it, plus a Lamborghini Gallarda also has a V10, and it's much better than a Viper. My M5 can still take on a Corvette C6 and win and carry me, my wife and our luggage with ease.

Are you seriously advising someone to take a Viper over this? For a start the Viper has 3 less seats, un-forgivingly less luggage space, poor reliability and lack of functionality. People don't buy cars because of how many cylinders it has. You buy a Viper if you want a sports car, you buy an M5 if you want an executive car. End of story.

id stick with the m3 "ultimate driving machine" if you want a v10 buy a viper, better handling, better weight distribution , better looks, better pricing.

The M5 is an fantastic car, it drives around a track like a dream and it is a nice car the rest of the week on your way to work. Simply a perfect car!

Okay I love the M5 and everything and I don't mind the design on the regular 5-series, but for some reason when you plant a V-10 under the hood with this look I hate it. I have been looking forward to some awesome, raw, intimidating car for sometime now and did BMW deliver, no. They gave us some weirdo design from the 80s future magazine and put crappy wheels on it and said it looks cool. WRONG!

"The torque is ""low"", if you can call it that, due to the fact that it is normally aspirated and 5 litres. Torque is almost directly proportional to displacement. I drive an E39 M5 and can assure you that there is no lack of torque. I can't wait for the new M5. AMG's will always be slow and fat around a track, which is where the fun is anyways."
A fan but its getting whacked soon.

Im a fan of bmw's in general and prefer them to Merc's and i too was glad when i found out they had raised the bar with horsepower and figured now it gave th E55 AMG competition, but to the guy b4 this who asked what Merc were goin to do about the competition.....An E65 AMG, like the CL65 AMG with 607 Bhp and 738 lbs/ft of torque which will be putting out over 600 Bhp and 1000 lbs/ft of torque....currently being developed for select customers in Europe....but would most likely get to production, just to whack BMW out of it. So yes its a triumph for BMW but not for long.

"how can one not be impressed with this new V10 from BMW. Its absolutely stunning!! over 100HP/liter from a N/A 5 liter V10. Yes i know the torque is ""low"" but 383 ft-lbs isnt exactly low. its low compared to hp output but not in general. But a high revving n/a car is always going to have a relatively low tq output. plus the 7 speed will help keep this car in its powerband which seems to be about 5000rpm. no the BMW driver isnt going to keep his car at 5000rpm all the time but neither will an s2000 owner, nobody would do that to their engine. thats why they have the manual gearbox (SMG in the M5s case) so all you have to do is downshift once or twice and bam your ready to eat that E55 for lunch. so appreciate BMW for what they have done with this car, and the engine they have put in it. because this is now the top dog of the midsize luxury sport sedan class. I wonder what mercedes will answer with???"
 Excitement? Sure. Dissapointment? A little.

"Yes, I think that it is exciting that BMW has once again raised the bar and that within the next few years the fellow Germans will try again to one-up the all to amazing M5. However, one thing that I do not quite undedrstand is the increadible lack of torque and the high-revving engine. Although BMW has never been known for killer amounts of torque, this car surely does not have the torque levels that a V-10 with such amazing sophistication should have. The engine actually reminds me of the Honda S2000. Though these cars are a world apart, I do find it ironic that the BMW approaches the car in a similar way. Like the Honda it has a conservative engine size for the amount of cylinders, 2.0 (now 2.2) I4, and 5.0 V-10. I also find it humorous that the M5 revs to an almost identical redline (8,000+) as the Honda, and in these high revs great power is achieved, instead of going with a turbo and a more natural six to seven thousand rpm redline. The difference though is that the average driver of an M5 is not going to keep the car at a steady 5,000rpm with immidiate power on tap, like an S2000 driver might. As in all other high revving engines, such as in the S2000 or Toyota Celica, the power is not exacly ""on tap"", but rather comes at a higher rpm. Unlike the other two fourbangers that require a quick (and fun) heal-toe shift, the BMW will require some ""enjoyable"" clicks on the wheel, and with a seven speed tranny (please), who knows how many clicks it could take. My personal choice, the Honda. At a fraction of the price, I would enjoy an S2000 much more, with a six-speed, a naturally high revving engine and an open top. Then again, I'm the guy that just sold his 325i for a Miata."
