The car debuted at the 1966 Daytona 24 hour race, with the movable rear wing/airbrake. The pedal to adjust it was the 3rd pedal, as the car had no clutch. The rear bodywork at the debut was similar to the open car, with the velocity stacks out in the air. The airbox was added later in the season. A scale model kit of the original design can be found on Ebay usually. The car had minimal success in endurance racing since they were just running one car against the multi-car teams of Ford and Ferrari. The 2D won the Nurburgring 1000K in '66, and the 2F won the BOAC 500 in 1967. Those were the only wins for the Chaparral Coupes.
Fluidly flicking through the fluent gears

This car, and in fact, all of Jim Hall's cars, were quite a sensation. They look the deal, and they went like hell, not to mention the clever technical features.
The 2D shown here is provided with a so-called 'fluid-clutch' system. there were three forward gears, with a hydraulic coupling and a torque converter. Sliding dog-clutches engaged the straight-cut gears. The driver changed gear by easing his foot on the throttle, thereby taking the load off the dogs, and then quickly moved the lever.
The 2D's succesor, the more square-edged 2F, even had an adjustable rear wing, which was connected to a pedal at the left hand side of the other three pedals: whenever the car went flatout on the straight, the driver depressed the pedal with his left foot, consequently turning the wing into a flatter position that caused less drag. Taking his foot off of the pedal, the wing automatically returned to full-drag angle.
A starkly simple solution it sure was.
The roadster 2E car also went into production again. Those who feel tempted should contact Chaparral.

Now thats an intresting car like most people the car was first brought to my attention by gt4 but the depth of information on the car is scarcely even brushed upon in it.

Now this is how cars should be built lightweight, low slung and powerful good article wouter!
