This Mercedes website has a photo of the 300 SLR with its air-brake deployed: http://www.mercedesslr.com/category/mercedes-slr/ (Scroll down about three-quarters of the way.) It appears to be (poorly) designed, specifically providing lift to the rear end of the car. I have never been able to discover whether it was deployed automatically under braking. If so, it seems that along with the upward-sloping (toward the front) Austin Healey 100 rear deck lid, the air-brake may have assisted the car's flight into the stands in the 1955 Le Mans crash. |
