| Not an Offy F1 Engine |
| Scarab 5 12-22-2010 |
The Offy was not used in F1 racing. The RAI crew designed (Leo Goosen) and bulit (travers and Coon) a custom, desmodramic valve (from the F1 Mercedes), 4 cyl. engine from scratch. Five engines were made and they had an oil passage restriction problem that wasn't found until the engines were rebuilt by Chuck Daigh for vintage racing after 2000. |
| I got to see these cars being built. |

The Offy that went into the Scarab 1 was sitting outside the Reventlow shop across the alley where I worked as a teenager. I went over there to look at it and one of the shop guys greeted me and explained some of the details of the engine. |
