Your numbers would probably translate pretty well to the US Porsches as well I suspect. I was comparing a fully optioned Cayman against a "basic" 911 if there is such a thing. My only point was that the Cayman is really not a moderately priced sports car when you add even a few of the most desirable options. I see no reason why a Porsche would cost more to build than say a 370z or a Corvette. The Porsches are built in limited numbers but so are the other cars. I do wonder what sports car would pass as the best sports car for the money these days. While I don't love the new tail lights or the totally insane fuel gauge design, I guess I would say the 370z would get my vote. By the way I'm not bashing Porsche, I used to have a 911 and it was a blast. Nothing compares to the engine sound (mine was an older air cooled version). I just think Porsche charges way too much for having their name on the car and that most of them are a good $10,000 over priced. |

Downunder in Australia the CAYMAN S at $AUD154k considerably underprices the 911 whose prices range from $AUD219k for the entry CARRERA up to $AUD289k for the 911 TARGA 4 S althouugh a horny 911 TURBO goes for $AUD361k and a potent 911GT2 takes a walloping $AUD447k! These prices are base prices without options and for the exercise I 'tricked' up a 911 TARGA 4 S with options I would want and the total increased by $69k to $AUD358k - no wonder PORSCHE are so profitable. With the CAYMAN S I went totally insane and chose all the options available, all $103k of them to get a total of $AUD258k. Still a massive $100k less than the 911 and if I ditched the PCCB, the ceramic brakes which are only needed for sustained race-track work, I would save a further $20k and reduce the cost to a mere $AUD238 - what a bargain for a totally tricked out world's best sportscar! In reality, I would not feel at all deprived to delete most of the overpriced 'cosmetic' options such as $4,700k for wheels painted in the cars exterior colour and get the car for around $AUD200k. That's $158k less than the 911 price. As for the Corvette its a wonderful car but a different breed. Comparing it with a CAYMAN S is like having a sabre cutlass versus a rapier epee. And you get what you pay for. If a CORVETTE ever gets the materials, finish and build quality production values of any PORSCHE I will really take notice. In my view no marque now builds a car better than PORSCHE and at circa $AUD200k the CAYMAN S is an utter bargain. |

IF I'm not mistaken the Cayman that Winding Road tested cost $95,000 which is more than a 911 so I guess the Cayman beats the 911 in more ways than one. The 370 gives you 95% of the goodness for less than half the price and I suspect even the base vette would give it a run for the money. |

at last a PORSCHE that can finally put the 911 where it should be - confined to History. the latest issue Feb 09 WINDING ROAD online mag calls the CAYMAN S the best sports car in the world - PERIOD; BAR NONE; WITHOUT EXCEPTION! at last someone rational and fearless enough to get away from the "Emperor Syndrome" to tell the truth the way it is and not what they think it may or should be! and thanks to those at PORSCHE for the cajones, vision and skill to equip this car with the extra bhp etc to do it all - keep it going guys! |
