I was at the Portland GTP races in the early 1990s and watched the Mazdas from the pits. With the engine bay open, the car is unimpressive. If it had a Huey turbine engine it it, I would have said, "Gee, neat", and walked away. I have always been stuck on lots of cylinders, intricate valve trains, be it desmodromic or total loss oiling, squadrons of Webers hovering over the engine and so on. Those 3 rotors were nothing to marvel at....until they lit up.
Japanese crotch rockets go past my house every weekend at upwards of 120 mph. There is a certain music to the scream. I come to attention when a 1960s cafe racer blows past. This time, the Mazdas produced something new. A triple rotor has the same cyclic resonance as a 6 or a 12. The smoothness of a big Healey 6, or a Testa Rossa ripping its way out of a corner were the standards for smooth in my ears. This Mazda was spectacularly smooth, all the way up to infinity, and thats where the trouble was. True, have an exhaust note that only dogs can appreciate might have its uses, but in this case the the maximum performance occurred at a point that shattered eardrums. I loved the ripping howl of the engine, until it hit that peak output and sent a rather sharp ice pick right through my ears. It hurt, plain and simple. I never thought I would plug my ears when a race car came by, but this car was the definition of a love-hate abusive relationship. And to prove that point, I would readily go back for more.
