Actually an independent rear suspension is inappropriate for a mustang. Especially since Ford catered to traditionalists with both of their sports cars. Honestly mustang and 911 fans have a lot in common; they are attracted to the tradition and prestige of the name and like the traditional albeit compromised design.

The new 5 liter Mustang might make a good alternative to the Porsche 911. If Ford charged $90,000 people would drool all over it but becasue it is reasonably priced people will turn up their noses. Compare the specs and the cars aren't far apart. Now if only ford would offer a track package with better brakes and an independent rear suspension they would really have something.

It might have 160mph 8000rpm guages to impress the "Ooh look at that" brigade but your not going to see the needles go anywhere near those limits without serious modifications, like turbocharging. But with the no doubt lack-lustre braking and suspension package supplied, would you really want to? If you want a Ford Six that looks great, stops and handles like it should and can really bend the needles, you might want to consider an Australian Built 310kw F6 Typhoon. Regardless, I still love the styling of these cars, as pretentious as they are.

It is a strange package to get a high tech howling V6 in a car with a live axle. I bet the curb weight hasn't improved any. Ford still doesn't make any cars I find desireable. I've driven the Mustang Shelbý GT500 and the thing is not very fast and it handles like a pickup truck. Breaking stability at speed was terrifyingly absent! The car looks great, but it needs to lose some weight and get a modern suspension like the Corvette (which I love).
