What the hell are you talking about run the car for 3 hours and need to rest the motor????? Listen people, dont rely on crazy comments like you see on a forum or such. This car is teh SAME 996 turbo motor with racing upgrades such as titanium rods, larger intercoolers, high boost along with a ton of suspension and braking upgrades. I own a 89' 930, a 94' 965, a 97 993 turbo and an 01' 996 turbo (Imagine Auto gt4 upgrade making 650hp), and our shop has an 01 996 gt2. ALL of these cars can run for MANY HOURS with no limits as can ANY race car, porsche, ferrari, benz etc WITHOUT a cooling down period, that comment above is just absurd.... The braking is SUPERB on all these cars, and most braking differences in the list above can only really be noticed under extreme track conditions. Please try to make comments that make sense and possibly try owning the car before spouting off with nonsense....

i didn't think much of the GT2 after i saw it for my own eyes.it was in pure white & it was breathtakingly beautiful.i also noticed that its front is longer than the turbo & its sleek spoiler makes it look very cool.people who are looking for luxury will be disappointed as it lacks many features to reduce weight.but who cares, the GT2 is considered one of the best cars on the track. now, if only i could save my allowance for 25 years i may be able to but one.

I am one of the few fortunate men to own such a car. Now before I had this, I had the whole range, including the 996 Turbo. I know what to compare. Both cars are great to drive, but the GT2 takes the award hands down. The rear whell drive makes the car one for a real driver, not just an unexperienced fool, however, if you are looking at buying one, I do advise getting a professional racing driver course. This allows you to experience all that the car has to offer. Yes the car is faster, better looking and much faster, but there are a few downsides. The total spec is not as good as the Turbo. Some of the luxuries that you would expect have been taken away to help with weight reduction. Even a roll bar has been fitted. Recently I have been e-mailing the guys at Ruf sport. These guys are totally crazy, they modify and enhance the performance of these Porsches. They are currently developing modifications for the GT2, but have the materials to enhance the looks of the Turbo (mainly for aerodynamics) and increase the performance to 520BHP! That's serious power. They said that they may be able to put the power of the GT2 to a whopping 628BHP. That's crazy. The whole point of this though is to give the opinion of the GT2....It's amazing, the best Porsche road car yet....I have a 360 and it betters that by far. Rob.

"I am very fortunate to own such a raging animal. This car is, and yes I have owned many Porsches throughout the range, the best 911 to date. It is fantastic! Yes the driver is deprived of some of the total spec luxuries that you get in the 911 turbo, but you really don't care when driving it. You start the engine and hear every one of the 462 horses trotting and as soon as you put the foot down...BAM!!! You're at 130mph. It is truely crazy. For me it is the best because of the driving antics. The turbo is 4 wheel drive which is good but not as fun. The GT2 lets you get ""its arse out"" shall we say. I do have a racing licence and I do enjoy the full potential, this is a car to LOVE!!!"

"The way I see it, the GT2 is better for the track. It will be faster and more entertaining than a regular turbo, if driven by an expert in rear engine cars. The ceramic brakes are fade free after hard use, dissipates heat faster, and are probably easier to modulate. It needs to be up to temp before it provides full stopping power, however. The 996 TT sits an in. higher, which makes it a LOT easier to live with in every day driving (one of my cars has a 4"" clearance; every driveway is a pain). The brakes are more than adequate for all but the most punishing track use, and the rear-biased 4 wheel drive adds a measure of safety that should't be dismissed. Get the X50 package and it's on par with the GT2 in BHP, while still being about $50-60K cheaper. That'd easily buy you the fixed wing, which I think ALL 911s should have. That wing not just barely eliminates rear lift but supposedly actually produces over 100 Kg of downforce. Helpful when you're going over 150 MPH."

Man, it was at the Houston auto show. It was up on a platform, and yet it barely came up to my shoulders. Low, beautiful, and much more. I want one...

changing the whole braking technology(carbon ceremic)or improving/adding more technology to the current brake systems(disc brakes) I think the latter is better and i really respect what mercedes benz did. They were the ones who introduced sensonic brake control(SBC)to their cars. I think it is better the develope something which helps the driver to stop faster because it is the driver that is controlling the car and you may have the biggest carbon ceremic brakes on your car but if you are not fast enough or you do not step hard enough on the brake pedal you are going to crash but wat mercedes benz did was they made SBC so that drivers do not have to step too hard/all the way to the floor on the brakes under hard braking beacuse everything is computerised and SBC will help the driver a lot. Porsche 997s and beyond will all feature ceremic brakes which are good, no doubt but three cheers for mercedes benz!!!!!!

Aside from Porsche's SUV, this is the best car Porsch has ever built.

changed their air cooled engine to water cooled because air cooled engine was much more realible and it was porsches trademark of using air cooled engines. I read that the next 911 which will be called the 997 will have styling cues like the 993 and will be air cooled(YAY!!!) And most probably the gt2 will be getting a 6 speed automatic gearbox but i still think the manual is better. Cars which are coming out will be the 996 turbo cabrio and 996 carrera 4s cabrio. Porsche is doing very well as an independent sportsca........erm no, not sportscar anymore but a independent car manufacturer and will be forever!!!!!

Not only do the brakes provide better fade-resistance and heat dissipation, they weigh a lot less than the traditional steel ones. This reduction in unsprung weight is one of the things that helps the handling. and as for the GT2 being only able to run for 2 hrs. It's practically a racecar. i'm sure it can run for longer on a track, it's got many similarities with the racers. You can't believe that Porsche would make a car like this and not provide adequite cooling for the engine.

The reason the GT2 has only existed since the 993 is because the Turbo underwent a dramatic change with the 993. It changed from rear drive to all wheel drive. The GT2 is really the spiritual successor to all the pre-993 turbo 911s you mentioned there motorhead. The Turbo from the 993 onwards is a very different beast to any that came before it. For this reason, Porsche needed to create another model for the rear drive turbo 911s and thus the GT2 was born. Same goes for the 996 GT3 which rose from the ashes of the 993 RS CS. Personally I am too much of a rear-drive purist/turbo addict and would have to go for a GT2- 993 or 996.
not as good as the turbo...............

the 996 turbo is a much better car. it uses a much more realible engine. you can only drive it for 3 hours before the engine needs a rest of about 1/2 an hour. if you are planning to take this car into an endurance race, think again. The turbo is also much more famous(930, 964, 944, 993, 996) wheres the gt2 is not so(993, 996) If i had the money to buy a gt2 i wouldn't. I would get a turbo, send it to Hammann or Ruf and ask them to modify the car for me. this car has an acceleration time of 4.0 sec and that is just 0.2 sec more than the turbo but you are paying like $30000-$50000 or maybe $100000(in singapore) more for the gt2 which is nonsense. About the brakes they are really really expensive and they have only a slight difference in stopping power compared the disc brakes in the turbo but the carbon brakes do last very long though. Anyway it is still a porsche and thought i prefer the turbo the gt2 is still one of the best cars around.

"I've driven in many ""sports"" cars before both on the road and race track, and the verdict is in. After my test drive in the GT2, I have to say it is the greatest car I've ever had the pleasure of driving. Most people would look at the stats and say that a 3.6L 460 HP engine is not enough for a car that is supposed to be the best, WRONG!Its not all about HP, looking at acceleration and top speed a Viper or a Lamborgini might be more impressive, but on the track they dont come close. Porsche has put together a total car, The ceramic breaks are superior to any other car, and the handling is very responsive and presice, demanding your full concentration when driving. The car is very stable at any speed and the aerodynamics of the car make sure that you stay on the track with plenty of downforce. In the end you're able to brake later, enter a turn faster, and accelerate out quicker resulting in unbelivable track times that I never imagined before."""

Looking at all those car testing shows everyone has a different result for the 0-60mp/h of this sports car, i heard anything from 3.6s up 3.9s those are very good 0-60 times. I don't get why Porsche under estimates them selfs by saying the time is 4.1s......PORSCHE FOREVER
ahead of its time, a beautiful car

I had the opputunity to see this car today at the auto show, I was speechless. This car was my pick of the litter along with the Ferrari 550 maranello, a lambo countach and diablo, and a porsche gt3. With a 0-60 time of 4 seconds and top speed of around 190, this is possibly one of the ultimate supercars of our time.

An early morning in June last year I met up with a few people from a carmag. They were going to test a couple of great cars but I was not told which. As I met them in time I asked ofcourse but before I got my answer as the boss at the carmag came powersliding (to show off his collegues standing there) around the bend facing me. He didn't stop until he had passed me and the rest. Then he spun out a perfect 180, stopped infront of us and pulled down his window with a look of delight. The entrance was simply amazing and there it stood. The 996 GT2. I couldn't believe my eyes. After a couple of minutes I finally got my ride in it (I did not drive). What struck me was how cheap the 3 point seatbelt felt with it's tacky red color. Sure, it almost looks a bit race... Anyway, we pulled out on the highway in about 150-160 going around one of those 170 degree rights. Since it was morning we we pretty stopped (well, to reach 250...). It was amazing how you couldn't feel that you were going so incredibly fast, it felt like crusing when you hit 100 on city streets! On the highway the driver slowed down below the limit in the fast lane to finally step on it. I must admit - the engine sound wasn't really what I expected but since it's a porsche I'll forgive it. We finally reached 260 km/h and then returned back to the others. With a slight trembling I exited the car to face yet another one... A diablo GT...

Beware Nurburgring Norschleife King. Disguised in the familiar lines of the 996 Carrera, a true track monster worthy of all respect, fear and admiration. Jumping from 0-60 mph in less than 4 seconds, top speed over 190 mph, in whatever race track, be it a drag strip or be it Nurburgring, beware the Porsche 996 GT2.
