| 1 Series M |
| BMW63 12-15-2010 |
The primary reason for calling this new model the 1 Series M is to maintain the legacy of the original M1, the legendary BMW supercar from the late 70s. Many BMW fans and collectors, myself amongst them, were aghast at the thought of a production model M in the current lineup highjacking the M1 name. The M1 currently enjoys collector status, not only for its prominent place in the BMW Motorsport lineage, but also due to its rarity. Only 456 copies were built between 1979 an 1981, little more than the 399 Ferrari Enzos that were produced early this decade. A measure of the M1's desirability was seen October of this year when a 1979 M1 sold at auction for 264,000 USD, much higher than the pre-auction estimate of 165k - 215k USD. I expect that BMW will produce significantly more than 456 1 Series Ms during the next 12 months, none of which will approach 200k in value any time soon. That said, it appears to be a highly desirable performance tourer, just not a collectible. Cheers. |
