The Pomona July 8-9. 1961 GP race was won by Don Hulette and during the race, Bobby Drake in the Old Yeller IV and on the 12th lap Bobby lost control and went into the crowd. The Old Yeller IV was a new Old Yeller Special built by Max Balchowsky and just prior had a breakdown in the suspension at Laguna Seca. Bobby Drake was battling Hulette for the lead and was in the lead when the accident happened. etn
 Pamona Race in 1959

I was at the 1959 Sports car race at Pamona in 1959 where the Jaguar XKE was introduced with Carol Shelby (the course marshal) driving it. It was gold in color and a two door sedan.
During that race, Max Balchowlsky's Old Yeller II lost control in a turn and went into the crowd and killed a fan. They stopped the race right then. I was sitting on the opposite side of the track and could see the smoke from the fire that occured. They only used hay bales as barriers in those days. It was very sad.
