diesel |
alex 27-11-2002 |
in europe, 80% of the BMW's sold are diesels. mostly 320d 's, 525 tds', 730d 's, X5 3.0D, ... petrol engines are far too expensive here, because of the litres and litres they consume. in america, diesel is only used for trucks and so on. but a diesel engine has got a way higher torque, and a longer mileage. |
Diesel engines? Yes! |

In US you are forgetting something very important: these engines are not American diesel engines (lazy, not reliable and stinky), these are modern European engines which right now are the most advanced engines in the industry (TDI, CDI, Common Rail Technologies). Almost every European OEM has Diesel engines with an output greater then 200HP (BMW, Mercedes, VW-Audi even more...>250HP!!), but most important with a huge torque (usually greater then the torque of an big American V8 engine!!) So, if 258HP, 600 Nm (442.5 ft lbs) from 3.9L V8 engine is not sporty enough for you than compare this data with a base Mustang (3.8L-193HP-225 ft lbs) or even Mustang GT (4.6L-260 HP-302 ft lbs). My message: don't judge before you try!!! |
diesel not right? |

Please try it first before judging. You may not even notice that the car is fitted with a diesel so it may sound right when you start it up. Then floor it and the torque will glue you to your seat. It appears that in the USA people do not have a clue about developments in diesel technology and the efforts to reduce emissions while at the same time vastly increasing performance. 150 BHP from a 2 litre engine is no problem at all. You will still have a docile engine which will accept any revs between idle and 5000. Mileage will be about 60-80% higher than a comparable petrol engine. It simply is an ideal combination of a relaxing motorway tourer and a high performance car if need be. |
NO WAY! |

BMW has fine line of automobiles here in the U.S.A. and abroad. That straight 6 in their three series has been marked as one of the best engines produced. BMW 3,5,7,with diesels, just doesn't sound right. Maybe, in their M5 SUV but in a sports coupe, think not. |
