| Some clarification |

As stated, the Chaparral 2G was first raced in 1967 by Jim Hall. It was basically a re-engined version of the previous year's 2E model, which carried an aluminum small-block Chevy. For 1967 Hall modified the 2E to carry an aluminum 427 Chevy and reinforced the car's innovative strutted wing since the cable actuation mechanism of the 2E was prone to failure. The car shown in the picture is the 1968 incarnation of the 2G which had grotesque truck-like fenders grafted on to contain the gigantic Firestone tires which would not fit under the '67 fender configuration. The 2G came close to winning twice- once at Riverside in 1967 and again at Edmonton in 1968 but suffered mechanical problems both times. In its final race in 1968 at Stardust raceway in Las Vegas Jim Hall was nearly killed in the car when he climbed over the back of Lothar Motchenbacher's crippled Mclaren M6B at 150 mph, flipping and tumbling into the desert. This ended Hall's driving career, and in 1969 (not '68 as the caption states)John Surtees was hired to drive the diabolical Chaparral 2H which was a complete failure. The following year the ungainly-looking but revolutionary ground-effects 2G appeared, was fast, never finished, and was banned at the end of the season. Chaparral Cars never raced in the Can-Am series again. |
