I think the author made a typo on the cost of the engine upgrade. For $700,000 you could buy several of those cars (when they were new).
awesome...but moreso when the info is correct

An amazing car, built to go thru a traffic jam at 200mph, more than a few times the '70 superbird & its dodge counterpart the '69 daytona charger would place 1st, 2nd & 3rd in the same race with the ford talledaga's following somewhat behind.....it was an amazing time. Your research, tho usually quite thorough, is a bit off the mark this time. the race version of these cars were powered with a 426 cid.hemi, street versions were available with a 440 six-pack(3x2bbl hollys), rated at 385hp/480lb/ft and the 440(1x4bbl) at 330hp/480lb/ft and the street hemi 426(2x4bbl) conservatively rated at 425 at 4500rpm, it made peak power at 5800, at some 550+ hp. The 440 was not a hemi head engine.
 This is a magnificent car

This car is so awsome i say this is better than a charger daytona even though there the same. It was ashame nascar kicked out the hemi and the winged cars be cause the chevy and ford go carts were loosing too much.
