Yes it does! My father's 4L was my second drive ever. The gearbox was a nice help to me. No way you can miss a shift with that.
My first ride was the Opel Kadett 1.7d Van (2 seater), back 1989. I was still 11. My father had a small business and I used to spend my holidays working, helping his workers to unload materials from the vans. One day I was with this guy who worked for him and we stoped at a large place where the ground was gravel to collect money from a client. The van was brand new. I thought something like "I have the theory to drive, so I have to try!" I started smoothly but then front wheels stoped in a transversial hole. To take it out I had to accelerate a bit harder. It should have been a bit...
I pressed hard and finally got out in a drag race mode, spinning wheels a lot.
Drove for about 30 meters and stopped grinning like a fool. The guy asked me how the van went there but being the boss's son I had the right to remain silent!

Renault 4L, with its strange manual gear shift coming out of the dash board

I killed the Renault 4 (first car ever drove) gearbox when I wanted to put the fifth gear at 80 km/h who was the reverse (there is no 5 gear in this gear box). I tried to put it because I was switching between the R4 and a Passat TD all the time!
This car rusted so quickly but was the best on the snow!
And the seats were so badly design you were legs paralysed after a 2 hours trip, that was insane!
But I had a lot of fun with it (Handbrake was sadly in the front wheels!).

I think the first car I ever drove was a Chevy Cavalier or something like that, when I was 9 or 10. When I reached legal driving age, the first car I drove was an old Dodge Caravan. Learned stick on a Toyota Tercel.
