    a bit puzzling

    ok, in autocar they say that the alpina B7 has 493 hp, 515lb-ft, 1970kg and 0-60 in 4.8, 250 bgp/tonne, 186mph

sounds good, but they compare it to an s65 which is 604bhp, 737lbft, 272bhp/tonne, 2220kg, and 0-60 in 5.4 155mph (limited)

how can a car that has less hp, torque, bhp per tonne, and weighs only a smidgeon less get to 60 more than half a second less? is it that the s65 isnt geared for acceleration?

one problem that merc has is the camber of the wheels, you know that 1000 newton of tourque car? 6 men pulled it backwards. while clarkson was trying to go forward. those six guys moved it backwards. its all good and well to have 1000 nmt but you need a fair sized contact patch to put that down.. maybe the tyres were off alligned abit like that car is made with.

Contact patch SIZE is determined by the weight of the car and tyre pressure.
Shape varies based on camber, wheel size etc.
On all but a glass smooth surface the ability of the rubber to deform and 'bite' is as important.
Conclusion ? It will be gear change delays or the timing of the gear change (IMHO)

u can't really say that considering the difference is weight between the B7 (1970 kg or 4343lb) and the Merc (2220 kg or 4894lb) is 250 kg (over 500 lbs!) that amount of weight would truly make a difference in acceleration and whatnot

    nuff said

Which episode was it ? I'll d/l it and have a look, did they cite the tyre sizes ?
Based on what's been said, 500 pounds, yep that's good for a second !!!!!

yes but not so much that with 200 less hp and 200 less lb ft that it would be a full half second faster

500 pounds is a LOT of mass to have to move

Here's a 'fun' thing to assist.
These guys had gone into explaining why you cant' really do a calculator that will give 0-60 times and THEN went on to say that by analysing figures they got a close approximation. In reality it's got a +-10% variation so isn't REALLY accurate enough for this BUT notice that it gives a 0.4S difference

    http://www.cars-cars-cars.org/0-60-Times-Calculator.htm

    Code:
                weight of car in kilogrammes
    0-60 time = ---------------------------
maximum bhp of car * 0.9
    Alpina B7 = 1970 / 493*0.9 = 4.4s

    S56 = 2220 / 604*0.9 = 4.0s

It also has to do with the gears. So ya. Maybe the S65 was made for better gear change and more comfortable acceleration. You won't really need 4.5sec acceleration because the average mph/kph is 35/55 so that is why.

Highways here range from 80km/h to 115km/h, which is basically 50-72mph. Most highways near cities are 90km/h, which is 56mph. On nice days people tend to drive at around the same speed that your Dad does.
