The Mini Cooper makes a pretty strong challenge to those BMWs I mentioned for the title of best ever. Not only did it dominate its class, it won races outright against big V8s like the Mustang - pretty impressive if you ask me.
The Lotus Cortina is another outstanding 1960s car with a strong record against tough opposition.
UCP's biggest Ford Sierra RS500 and BMW M3 E30 fan. My two favourite cars of all time.
Oh, for class wins, Henk, you forgot about those amazing little Toyota Corolla GTs from the late 1980s - absolutely unbeatable in the 1600 cc class at the time, but unfortunately the competition was pretty weak and it didn't score outright victories like the Mini did. Still, it was an impressive little car for the time.

The Nissan Skyline GTR family because it dominated almost every race it entered and the Mercedes Benz 190E touring car, because it has a good combination of handling/speed.
The Dodge Stratus id still an unknown touring car that was raced in the u.s.a. in a touring series, that i forgot against the Honda Accord.

I'm dropping out to create a company that starts with motorcycles, then cars, and forty years later signs a legendary Brazilian driver who has a public and expensive feud with his French teammate.
Excellent posts MSN. Greatest Touring Car ever...? Wow, that's a toughie. Well, I'm biased so I would say the RS500, but in this case I won't. It was a very good car for sure - but not the greatest. I too would probably go with the E30 M3. The little 4 cylinder normally aspirated Beemer was an absolute jewel of engineering compared to the crude, big-capacity V8's and forced induction Sierras. They were a fabulous road car. Wait, what am I saying, they *still are* a fabulous road car - testament to 1980's BMW 'hewn-from-granite' build quality.
When it comes to my favourite touring cars, the RS500 is of course top, followed by the Rover SD1 Vitesse, E30 M3, M635CSi (what a sound), the Holden VL Commodore and the Triumph Dolomite Sprint.
To prop up the vote for the RS though, I do believe it is still claseed as the most successful touring car ever or some such with 40 straight wins in the British Touring Car Championship. Internationally, I am not sure whether that record holds up. The Ford Sierra was also more successful that even the Escort in World rallying as well - hard to believe given the dominance of the Mk1 and Mk2 Escorts, but true.
I'm RS500 mad - someone shoot me...
I like the current Mercedes-Benz CLK DTM
This is my first post and after reading all other posts in this thread it is my last hope of finding pics of the Greg Murphy, Kayne Scott Sierra that they drove in the Wellington 500 in 92. I am looking for an above pic of the car to include the roof and rear spoilers.
Thanks in advance
Awesome info in the thread
Cheers

Talking about Famous Touring Cars, a frind of mine owns a TWR Rover 3500 V8.
The car was always raced at Portugal by Pedro Meireles and Ni Amorim (ex-DTM and GT2 racer) but entered a race for the European Touring Car Championship at Estoril.
Here are the pics of how it looked in those days (1986) and how it looks today.
The car has had a recent engine rebuid, and it's for sale for 20.000€

yep, my bad, I didn't even know that Audi used the 90 for racing. With those colours I had automatically assumed that it was an 8. Note to self: always take a pic of the sign in front of the car.

They also used the previous 90 for rallying. But not for long.Originally Posted by henk4
