TORONTO - Forty eight international, automobile journalists, of significant stature and representing sixteen countries, have recognized the progressive, sporty Audi A6 as the best car in the world this year.

The selection was made from a list of thirty six new vehicles which were available for purchase, prior to January 1st 2005, in at least five countries, on at least two continents. The jury used twenty three separate parameters, including acceleration, braking, vehicle dynamics, safety features, cargo and off road capabilities before making their decision. It is about time AUDI!!!

    Congrats!!!

Congrats to Audi, I'm a big fan of Audi because they're underrated (at least here in Canada) but they're DAMN GOOD cars. Truly represents german engineering.

Would North America be a mandatory continent where a car needs to be sold? That would rule out quite a number of interesting european cars, which never make it to there.

I don't know about you guys...but I don't consider 'off-road capabilities' when I'm shopping for a car...unless it was a rally car. Even if I bought an SUV it would be for the utility of it, not off-road prowess.

Why in hell would this be a criteria for a road car?

If you read in your original post:

Of course they may have been referring to SUV comparisons when listing 'off road capabilities'.

Did they compare only cars since this is the World Car of the year, or were SUV's in the hunt for the award too?

I don't know about the 2005 Audi A6, but I just purchased a 2005 Audi S4 for my winter driving (lots of snow here in Rochester, New York, USA), and she's fabulous-great AWD traction (with a 17-inch winter wheel package), lots of power and crisp steering, a nice Teutonic feel. And a higher power-to-weight ratio than the A6. I also prefer the "old" chrome grill on the S4. But Audi looks like they're building some fine cars with a solid line-up.
