Yeah, it's a little confusing... but one option would be to get a new wall charger.

i want to put it in disk mode so i can store phone numbers on it, and the ipod website says you need a wall chrger to do so, but i left mine at a hotel

iPod Replacement Parts are a bit Exxy.
I think if you want to put it in Disk Mode, Just plug it into your comp and close iTunes when it opens, Search for the iPod Drive Removable Device, and it should have some files which you can shift things over into.
Try that.
