With a substantial weight advantage the ML has over the Cayenne (I think around 250kg) I would say that it will have way more potential especially when the center lock diff. arrives next year.

Looking at the tires I suppose it is, though I'm not entirely sure.

French video review, includes some mild offroading and fording of water.

For those who don't speak French, the highlights of the review (translated by thiaballs @ GCF)

    - Looks are aggressive yet elegant. Does not leave you indifferent
    - Automatic gear lever annoying
    - Bigger space, and in the trunk area
    - Huge list of options, although very expensive
    - Improved interior quality (drastic)
    - 2000 euro for Off road pack, which brings diff lock, protection under the car
    - Improved road handling

Think about it, who do you see behind the wheel of SUVs most of the time? How often do you see them off road? Not that often I bet. I just don't see the point to these vehicles, aside from taking a whole bunch of kids back and forth.

Are you kidding? Why would you buy a Cayenne if you needed to go offroad, its an image car. Get the Toureg if you wanna go offroad.

exactly. the cayenne is like bit performance and appareances. It's a porsche. While VW's Touareg has 4Motion so much better off road experience. 4motion is kind of like quattro in my point of view

4Motion is a good system, but one must remember that the Porsche shares Tech with the Tourag, not just a bodyshell.

It's just because it's got a Porsche Badge and Huge front Grille that i'm resistant to it. It's a real off roader, but no one will use it that way.

Go, if you must, for the $70,000 Tourag V6, much cheaper than the rest, somewhat of a bargain in the Premium 4x4 segment, doesn't look garish, and has some off-road cred.

    Alternatively, buy a Landcruiser.

Well a well equiped Cruiser will get you anywhere. Personally i'd take the Toureg before the Cayenne offroad as VW actually gave it a 2 speed transfer case, decent ride height and the V10 diesel

Maybe it was the spec sheet for the TT model that i was reading......

That things wasted on the Cayenne though, who actually needs a premium 4WD to have a low range gearset?

I suppose, but remember a major proportion of sales for things go to sheiks and the like travelling in the desert searching for oil fields to fuel their new beasts

You might need 4wd when your crossing Dunes......

4WD for sand, yes. Low range? i dunno, as far as i know you need to keep momentum in sand and have a bit of slip with the tyres, so maybe keeping it in high range would achieve that better.

Keeping moving is the key, but how about pulling someone out of the sand?
