Engine alone will run you about $600. A full VR setup (engine, tranny, guage cluster, wiring, axles, brakes) will run about $2000. Or about the difference from a 2.0 Jetta to a VR Jetta.

90,000 miles is nothing. As long as it's been maintained, it'll run forever. If you look at them, make sure that if it's at or over 100,000 the timing chains have been done. If they haven't, chances are good the car's been neglected. Stay away.

Hyundai Sonata, all the stuff of a $30,000 car in a $17,000 package, it feels sturdy and is rated at excellent reliability by Consumer Reports, this has to be a best buy.

but if you buy it on Ebay, you will get it for less!

Alright now THIS is just about perfect for me. Its got a small v-tech with good power, its sporty, its cheap, and it seats 4. Also, people (a lot of JDM mods for this one) make mods mods for this car.

    Perfect IMO.

Def. true, I've been preaching about Hyundai's good qualities here and there, the Sonata IS a good car for the money. My dad is considering buying the new one I think.

Me and my friends cruise around in an old BMW ('85 323i, manual, air-con, RWD, 2.3l I6) you could do a lot worse than something like that with your budget. They'll take an engine swap nicely if you want to, and high mileage isn't a problem if it's been looked after. The one I have is all but bulletproof, never left me stranded anywhere, and she's done 330,000 Kms. That's over 200,000 miles. The rings are starting to go, but she's not been maintained overly brilliantly. Very nice to drive though, less noise on the freeway than our '97 Volvo 850 T5. Parts aren't too bad either, and they rarely break anyway. That oughta fit the bill.

both bimmers Toyotas and Hondas are best buys for first cars. They have a record for reliability.

Taurus is a smart choice. The older fords (1980-1994) are very reliable, i know that from expirance. (my dad's 1989 Taurus just needed a power steering pump the time we owned it, and his 1993 Escort wagon which he still owns only needed a belt, trans lines, radiater and cooler vacuum lines and a Cold Air Intake, the rest was oil chanfges and maitnence. so an 1980-1994 ford is a very reliable and smart choice. you can ring at least 200,000 miles out of them (if you properly care for them) before they pass to that great parking lot in the sky.
