A Peugeot transmission was offered in some Jeep/AMC vehicles in the '80s and '90s so you're closer to the mark than you might think.

Yeah I would have figured Renault parts, not Peugeot parts. Just goes to show you how interbred the damn industry is; even 30 years ago, before the current bigger wave of consolidation and globalization.
Well, thinking about it the Renault deal gave AMC access to the PRV engine (if I'm not mistaken). Maybe the Peugeot connection comes from there.
