dydzi, a ship is huge and a boat is usually privately owned.
Just search up Queen Mary 2 :P. Worlds biggest cruise ship.
Royal Caribbean's eagle-class is only .5 ft less.Originally Posted by Chinky_boi

Nope. That red tanker is biger.
It is actually a bit of a cheat. In the 1970's a French yard built what then were the four biggest tankers, each with a deadweight capacity of about 555000 Tons. (Deadweight is the total weight of the load that can be carried, including fuel). Two were for Shell, two for Elf. At that time the tanker market was characterised by a large surplus, resulting in the famous pictures of all these behemoths laid up in Norwegian fjords and Brunei Bay. The Knock Nevis was built in 1976 as the Oppama, named after the yard it was constructed, and was designed as 412000 DWT ship. The greek owner of the tanker somehow managed to get away with refusing delivery, and the new ship was laid up for two years. It was then bought by Chinese shipping tycoon CY Tung, (who'se son later became the first Chinese governor of Hong Kong) and in the eternal masculin game about who has the "biggest", he decided to add a new midbody construction to ship, turning it into the longest ship ever build, with a 560000 tons capacity. He aptly named the ship Seawise (CY's) Giant.Originally Posted by pergarec
Also the career of this one was not so happy. While being used as a storage/transfer ship in the Persian Gulf at the height of the Iran-Iraq war, it was hit by an Iraqi missile, and very heavily damaged, in fact to such an extent that everybody thought it would go for scrap. At the time the Norwegian shipowner Anders Jahre thought otherwise, bought the ship, spent 50 (insurance covered) million$ on repairs and relaunched the ship as Jahre King, which only enjoyed a marginally profitable life, with each voyage being reported in the maritime press.
As the ship is single hull, it's mandatory end as a trading vessel is near, but it might see a further carreer as on offshore storage vessel, or even be fully converted to a Floating Production facility.
All four french built ships have long disappeared, one of the Elf ships was sold after 6 six years only for scrap in South Korea, the 2 shell tankers were scrapped after 10 years and only one of the Elf tankers kept struggling on until 2003, but spending most its time in lay-up.

This is now my line of business
Well, for the moment at least...
FWIW RE Octopus:
1. It's ugly
2. Rising Sun is bigger - Larry Ellison had a few meters more added to the hull length when Octopus was launched.

Project Platinum is also bigger - started by Lurssen ages ago and now being finished off in Saudi Arabia or something. About 550ft.
Apparently Roman Abramovic is chopping in his fleet of three big uns (Pelorus, the stupidly fast Feadship Ecstasea and Le Grand Bleu) for one very big un.
