    Glas 1300/1700GT

    Glas 1300/1700 GT

The beautiful Frua designed Glas 1300 GT was presented at the IAA in Frankfurt in 1963. The svelte body stood on the chassis of the boxy 1304 series and turned that ugly duckling into something immensely more attractive. The engine was the same 75 BHP unit as in the sedan, but the later version got 85 BHP. The chassis was relatively simple, with a leaf sprung rear axle, but handling was considered to be excellent.

In May 1965 the 1700 GT was presented, with a larger engine. As the engine capacity increase was achieved by using a longer stroke, the free revving capacity of the 1300 engine was not matched, but the low end torque made up for that.

Both cars were also available as cabriolets.

Production lasted until September 1967, with almost 5400 cars produced, roughly 2/3 with the 1300 cc engine. BMW continued to built the car for another year as the 1600 GT.

Shown are a 1300 Cabrio and a 1700GT Coupe, which were both present at the Frua memorial during the 2003 Concours d’Europe at Schwetzingen, Germany.
