    HELP!!!! gmc s15 overheating

i bought an 82 s15, 2.8 v6 5 speed transmission 2bl carb. this truck is 99 percent stock. when i bought it, i needed to replace the heater core. it took a little bit of work, but i got it in ok.
a bout 2 weeks later the truck heated up, so i shut it off, when i did i noticed that there was water everywhere. the top hose had blown a hole big enough to stick my pinky in so i replaced it, the bottom hose, and the thermostat. since then i have been heating up a lot. i cheked the belts, cheked the connections and evan replaced the cap. is my water pump is suppose to have a little play in it? i was cheaking to see if there was any belt slippage i noticed that i could move the waterpump & flexfan pully a little bit. it is just a hair up and down. i don't know if this is normal, bad, worn or otherwise. i also noticed that wen it started to heat up, i could speed the engine up a little and cool it off (something that buggs me, because i know it is there to work, not me to babysit ). i don't know cooling systems very well. i am open to any suggestions, tests (perferably without taking anything apart that i don't have to) or otherwise
