I remember being at a concert at the ellipse and watching the snipers walk around the roof of the White House and War buildings.

Well, in the Netherlands guns arent allowed at all. But somehow there were 2 dutch criminals shot in the past 3 days...

I agree that it guns don't cause high murder rates, violent crime, etc. However they do contibute.

For instance; the USA's murder rate is about 5.something, whereas most of Europe is 0.somthing to about 2.something.

So it is fairly easy to see that in societies where guns are not readily available the murder rate is more than halved.

Interestingly though, Switzerland has one of the lowest murder rates in Europe, despite nearly everyone having guns because nearly everyone is in the army.

Therefore it is clear that the cause of high murder rates, violent crime, etc is not gun ownership by itself, but obviously a social issue.

However, having guns all over the place is never going to reduce the number of murders etc significantly.

It stands to reason that if all robbers, car jackers, etc carry guns and use them, their victims are less likely to be killed than a criminal carrying a bat, knife, whatever.

Two reasons; being stabbed/ hit in the head is usually more survivable than being shot.

People are more likely to use a gun than a knife/ bat because it is a more distant/ remote act, therefore easier to commit from a psycological standpoint.

I suspect that the general American attitude to life is quite low if people are so much more willing to kill each other.

And it must be an American-specific problem, since the UK recieves a lot of USA-born film, tv, music and video games, yet we're not all killing each other.
