Generally acclaimed the prettiest car ever designed in Poland (not much to chose from actually ), the Syrena Sport was a work of a few car passionates working in the late 1950s in FSO (Fabryka Samochodów Osobowych, Passenger Cars Factory), the main polish car production facility. Construction of the only prototype took 3 years, they were working in spare time basing on their own funds.
Syrena Sport was based on Syrena, the first totally polish passenger car after the WW2. (see photo 1) The engine was built especially for this car on the base of a motorcycle one from Junak. It was a 750ccm boxer, able to produce 25 hp at 5000 rpm. The car had a maximum speed of 110 kph.
After presentation in 1960 the car gained a great interest in media. Everyone wanted to know when the production would begin. But it was the time, when polish First Secretary Gomulka claimed that a bicycle should be enough for everyone in a communist society. So the prime minister ordered to stop showing the car and hide it somewhere, so that people stoped thinking about it. In the 70s the prototype was definitely destroyed.
Here you can see Syrena-the base for Syrena Sport and two of about 10 existing photos of the Sport prototype.
