Subscribing brings up the post in your User CP, and if you request no e-mail notification, it wont e-mail you when a new post is posted.

If you subscribe to a thread, you can choose whether or not you'd like notification of new replies via e-mail.
If you don't want tons of e-mails, it'll let you see which of your subscribed threads have new replies via the user control panel. If you click on "subscribed threads" it'll show you a list of the ones you've subscribed to and tell you who posted last and when...it's easy to use and personally i think it's worth it if you're not on here 24/7.

I use the UserCP subscription a lot. I currently have just under 110 subscriptions (109). Keep in mind most of them are dead threads...
