all the pointers are there --- ALSO get the smallest lightest camera you can scrounge or borrow. A lot easier that expensive/compex vibration mounts !! Heavey needs fluid dampeners or multi-ratre rubbers, light gets away with a bit of foam.

If you've some cash around and intend using the in-car footage to attract more sponsors then invest in a bullet cam with an AV output to a cheap camcorder. ( and no vibration mount required )

I was planning on using my camera that i bought about a year ago now one of those sony handycam thingies its smallish and records in dvd quality as it records to mini DVD's and yeah, sponsors is what i was thinking

oooh, be prepared to be disappointed
I can't see the DVD write head trackign through the shock loading of a rally car.
Even "robust" tapes you get tape bounce on yumps and severe ditches

Stopping the low vibrations is going to be even more important.
Good luck and try lots of different solutions !!!

get a tripod, rip the head of and weld it onto your cage, position it properly, then weld up the head

Aren't rollcages made of steel? If so, good luck welding an aluminium tripod onto it.

ah the mythical ability of welding aluminum to steel.......

Mazda did that to the new Miata though, they friction welded a section of aluminum trunk to the steel frame....

well not being a metal worker, i don't actually know anything about that kind of stuff
